Kullu & Mandi · Western Himalaya & Trans-Himalaya

The Devta Corridor

Himachal Pradesh

An entire institution — the village deity with land, treasury, palanquin, manager and oracle — running continuously from the Mandi basin through Kullu and Seraj into the Sutlej valleys and on towards Kinnaur, with Dussehra at Kullu and Shivratri at Mandi as its two great assemblies.

In Kullu the deities converge on Raghunath and the assembly is the festival; at Mandi they call on Madho Rai in a town setting; in the Sutlej valleys the same system runs without a single presiding deity at all. Westward into Kangra the institution thins out into ordinary temple worship, which is the clearest cultural boundary in the western Himalaya.

Pahari Miniature Painting Corridor

Himachal PradeshJammu & Kashmir

The Pahari painting workshops and the painter families who carried them — Basohli, Guler, Kangra, Chamba, and the smaller hill courts including Mandi and Kullu, which commissioned work in the same idiom from the same lineages.

Basohli is hot, flat and saturated; Kangra is cool, atmospheric and lyrical. The Mandi court's painting is darker and more austere than either and is more interested in Shaiva subjects than in Krishna's, which fits a state that made a deity its sovereign.

Gaddi Transhumance Corridor

Himachal Pradesh

Sheep and goat flocks, and with them a dress, a dialect and a repertoire of songs — from winter grazing on the low Kangra and Chamba slopes, over the Dhauladhar passes to Bharmour, and on across the Pir Panjal into Lahaul and Pangi for the summer. Their routes cross the ridges of this region, and their winter camps sit on its lower ground.

The herders keep two economies and two calendars, one settled and agricultural, one high and pastoral. Where Kullu's own households moved into apple orcharding, the Gaddis did not, and the two now share the same slope in entirely different modes of life.

Tibetan Exile Corridor

Himachal PradeshKarnatakaUttarakhandTibet Autonomous Region

Monastic institutions, a medical tradition, a food repertoire and a population — established at Dharamshala from 1960 and in settlements across India, and reaching this region through the Rewalsar monasteries, the Tibetan colonies in the Kullu valley and the food now sold at every bus stand.

Dharamshala holds the administrative and monastic centre; here the presence is smaller and older in one respect, since Rewalsar has been a Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage site as Tso Pema for centuries and did not need the exile to become one.

Wool and Shawl Corridor

Himachal PradeshLadakhJammu & Kashmir

Fibre and pattern moving in opposite directions — pashmina from the Changthang goat herds of the Ladakh plateau and merino and hill-sheep wool from Himachal into the Kullu looms, and the geometric border grammar that came from Kinnaur and Bushahr into a valley that had woven only plain cloth.

Ladakh and Kashmir kept the fine-fibre spinning and the shawl as luxury; Kullu built a cooperative industry in medium wool and made the border pattern its identity; Kinnaur kept the older, denser version of the same pattern language and its own registered craft.

Rohtang Trans-Himalayan Corridor

Himachal PradeshLadakh

The old trade over the Rohtang saddle between the monsoon valley and the dry country beyond it — wool, salt, borax and barley coming south, grain and manufactured goods going north — and the marriage and religious ties that followed the route.

South of the pass is Hindu, monsoonal and rice-eating with a devta system; north of it is Buddhist and Hindu together, dry, barley-fed and monastery-centred. The Atal Tunnel has made the crossing year-round, which is dissolving a seasonal boundary that shaped both sides.

The Apple Corridor

Himachal PradeshUttarakhandJammu & KashmirNepal

A crop and the labour that picks it. Commercial apple growing moved from the Sutlej plantings outward through Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur and the Uttarakhand and Kashmir hills within a few decades, taking with it grading sheds, packing conventions, cold stores and a seasonal migrant workforce that is largely Nepali.

Kashmir grows at scale for the domestic market with a long-established trade structure; Himachal built its industry on smallholdings with cooperative and state marketing behind it. The pickers, in both cases, come from outside and stay for a season.
