त्योहार

त्योहारकबक्या होता है
SankrantiMid-January, over three or four daysThe region's largest festival by a distance. Bhogi fires of household discards, rice-flour muggu redrawn every morning, gangireddu bulls and haridasu singers at the door, new clothes, and a general return of everyone who works elsewhere. Cockfighting is a persistent Sankranti custom in the delta and courts have repeatedly restricted it.
Prabhala TeerthamKanuma, the third day of SankrantiKonaseema's own Sankranti observance. Village deities are mounted on prabhalu — tall bamboo-and-cloth frames, some of them enormous — and carried on men's shoulders across flooded paddy fields to a common ground, where the frames from many villages assemble. The route goes through the fields rather than along the road, which is the whole point.
Godavari and Krishna PushkaramEvery twelve years each; the Godavari's next falls in 2027Twelve days of mass bathing when Jupiter enters the relevant sign — Leo for the Godavari, Virgo for the Krishna. Attendance runs to crores across the ghats at Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and the smaller river towns, and the state effectively rebuilds the riverfronts for it.
Vijayawada DasaraAshwina Navaratri (September–October)Nine nights at the Kanaka Durga temple on Indrakeeladri, with the goddess presented in a different form each day and the theppotsavam float procession on the Krishna. Queues run down the hill and through the night.
Bhavani DeekshaKartika, concluding in November–DecemberA forty-one day vow taken in black clothing, ending with a mass visit to Vijayawada to give up the deeksha at the river. Participants number in the lakhs and the practice has grown very fast in recent decades.
Antarvedi Kalyanotsavam and rathotsavamMagha (January–February)The deity's marriage and chariot festival at the Vasishta Godavari mouth, drawing pilgrims from across both deltas to a village at the end of the road.
Rottela PandugaMuharram, on the lunar calendarAt the Bara Shaheed dargah in Nellore, participants exchange rotis at the tank in fulfilment of a specific wish — one kind of bread for a marriage, another for a child, another for health — and Hindu and Muslim participants take part in comparable numbers. It is one of the largest shared observances on the Telugu coast.
UgadiChaitra Shuddha Padyami (March–April)The Telugu new year, marked by ugadi pachadi — six tastes in one preparation, eaten as an argument about the year ahead — and by a public almanac reading.
