नामवर्षक्षेत्रकिसलिए मशहूर
Rinchen Zangpo958–1055Translator and monastic founderThe great translator of the second diffusion of Buddhism in western Tibet, who is credited by tradition with founding a chain of monasteries across the western Himalaya, Tabo among them. The Tibetan canon in its western recension, and the Indo-Tibetan painting idiom that came with it, both travelled on his workshops.
Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche)Eighth century, by traditionTantric teacher, in tradition rather than recordLocal tradition through the upper Sutlej and Spiti attaches meditation caves, rock imprints and consecration sites to him, and villages such as Nako maintain shrines on that basis. The historical record is thin and the attributions are devotional, but they matter here as evidence of how the valley understands the arrival of Buddhism — up the river, by teacher rather than by conquest.
Alexander Gerard1792–1839SurveyorSurveyed the upper Sutlej and its passes in the 1810s and 1820s and wrote the first detailed outside account of Kinnaur, then called Koonawur. His measurements of village and pass altitudes are the earliest systematic record of the region's vertical geography.
Sándor Csoma de Kőrös1784–1842PhilologistA Hungarian scholar who spent years in the western Himalaya, including a long stay at the monastery of Kanam in upper Kinnaur around 1827–1830, working on the Tibetan language. His grammar and dictionary made Tibetan studies possible as a European discipline, and much of the work was done in a Kinnauri village.
Satyanand Stokes (Samuel Evans Stokes)1882–1946Horticulture and social reformAn American who settled at Kotgarh on the Sutlej below Kinnaur, introduced American apple varieties to the hills from 1916, and taught grafting and orcharding to local farmers. The Kinnauri apple economy that now dominates the region's cash income descends directly from that introduction; he later took Indian citizenship in effect, converted to Hinduism and was imprisoned during the freedom movement.
