Sung in alternation between the men's and women's halves of the dance line, with the text carried forward one couplet at a time and answered. Praise of a village, of a deity, of a season, and a great deal of teasing.

Songs sung when the cup is offered and refused and offered again — the refusal and the insistence are both part of the text, and the ritual of pressing a drink on a guest has its own repertoire.

Sung when the flowers are brought down from the high pastures, remembering the dead of the year and the young men who went up to gather. Grief and celebration in the same song, which is the festival's own structure.

Work songs timing collective labour — the flail, the winnowing, the carrying. Their tempo is the tempo of the task, which is why they are hard to sing off the field.

The daughter leaving her natal village, sung by the women of her house. In a region of small, high, hard-to-reach villages, marrying out has always meant leaving properly.
