Whatever is in front of the singer. A phawar is a couplet improvised on the spot and shouted rather than sung, answered by the crowd; it can praise, mock, mourn or make an argument, and the same performer will do all four in an afternoon.

A mother composes a short whistled tune for each newborn, and that tune is the child's name for life — used to call them across the slopes, where a whistle carries and a shouted name does not. The practice is explained locally as an act of respect towards the clan's first ancestress, the iawbei.
कब गाया जाता है: Naming, and everyday calling across a valley. Concentrated in Kongthong in the East Khasi Hills, with a few neighbouring villages; each person has a long form and a short form of their tune.
The dance-ground repertoire carried by tangmuri and drums rather than by voice — the melodies are named and fixed, and the dancers' steps are cued by them.

The Presbyterian and Catholic hymn corpus translated into and then composed in Khasi from the mid-nineteenth century. It is quantitatively the largest body of Khasi song, it is sung in four parts by ordinary congregations, and it is where most Khasi speakers encounter their language in print.
