Sub-Mediterranean rather than monsoonal — the Pir Panjal takes most of the summer rain out of the air before it arrives, so the valley's wettest months are March and April, from western disturbances, not July. Annual precipitation is around 650–700 mm on the floor, much of it as winter snow. January nights on the floor sit near or below freezing; July afternoons reach the low thirties. The single most important climatic fact is chillai kalan, the forty-day deep winter from late December, when the lakes can freeze and nothing is harvested.
