Changthang Pashmina Corridor

LadakhJammu & Kashmir

Raw pashm — the fine undercoat combed each spring from Changthangi goats on the Ladakh plateau above 4,000 m — carried west to the valley, where it is dehaired, hand-spun on the yinder and woven into shawl cloth. The fibre and the fabric have never been made in the same place.

Ladakh holds the herds, the altitude and the animal husbandry; the valley holds the spinning, the weaving, the embroidery, the market and the geographical indication, which attaches to the craft process rather than to the origin of the fibre. Ladakhi producers have been pressing for recognition of the raw material in its own right.

Kashmir–Central Asia Craft Corridor

Jammu & KashmirLadakh

The technique set itself — pile carpet knotting, papier-mâché and lacquer painting, paper making, bookbinding, khatamband joinery and the shawl loom — brought by craftsmen from Persia and the cities of Central Asia from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, along with the maqam system of Sufiana Mausiqi and the rabab and santoor that play it.

The valley kept the Persian design vocabulary and made it denser and more floral; the Central Asian originals stayed more geometric. The route ran east over the Zoji La and through Ladakh to Yarkand and Kashgar, which is why Ladakh's Nubra valley carries a Central Asian trace in its own food and dress.

Shawl-Weaver Migration Corridor

Jammu & KashmirPunjabHimachal Pradesh

Kashmiri weavers and their looms, moving south in waves through the nineteenth century — famine, disease and the collapse of the European shawl market each sent households out — to Amritsar, Ludhiana, Nurpur and beyond, where they set up shawl weaving on the Kashmiri pattern.

Punjab's shawl industry adopted the embroidered amli shawl, which finished far faster than a woven kani, and moved early to jacquard and machine assistance. The valley's workshops stayed with the loom and the needle, which is why the surviving hand technique is here and the volume went there.

The Pounded-Meat and Sealed-Pot Kitchen

Jammu & KashmirUttar PradeshDelhi

A professional cooking technique set — meat worked to a paste rather than minced, yoghurt gravies held without splitting, whole-spice infusion and slow sealed cooking — shared between the wazwan kitchen and the courtly kitchens of the plains through the Mughal and post-Mughal circulation of cooks.

Awadh applied it to tenderising and to fragrance, and lets nothing announce itself; Kashmir applied it to texture and to a fixed banquet sequence, and cooks with fennel and dry ginger where the plains use cumin and coriander. Kashmir has no biryani tradition of its own worth the name, which is the clearest evidence that the exchange was of technique, not of dishes.

Gujjar and Bakarwal Transhumance Corridor

Jammu & KashmirLadakhHimachal Pradesh

Flocks, families and the Gojri language, moving up from the Jammu foothills in April and back in September, along fixed routes over the Pir Panjal into the valley's high pastures and, for some groups, on towards the Zanskar and Warwan approaches.

The pastoral communities speak a language unrelated to Kashmiri, keep a distinct song and dress repertoire, and buy grain from the valley while selling it milk, ghee and animals — a separate economy running through the same country on a seasonal timetable.

Rishi and Sufi Shrine Corridor

Jammu & KashmirHimachal Pradesh

The shrine-centred devotional practice of the Rishi order and the Kubrawi and Suhrawardi Sufi lineages — urs observances, sung kalam, and the habit of a shrine being visited by people of more than one religious tradition — running from the valley out into the Chenab country and the Pir Panjal's southern slopes.

Inside the valley the Rishi order's vegetarian and forest-retreat emphasis is distinctive and local; on the southern slopes the same shrine practice sits alongside Pahari deity cults and looks quite different in its ritual furniture.

The Kashmiri Pandit Household Corridor

Jammu & KashmirDelhi

A kitchen and a ritual calendar carried out of the valley: the no-onion, no-garlic cooking built on asafoetida, fennel and dry ginger; Herath with its soaked walnuts; Navreh and its thali; the dejhoor worn from marriage; and the Devanagari orthography for Kashmiri. Most Kashmiri Pandit households left the valley around 1990 and the practices moved with them.

Away from the valley the calendar survives better than the ingredients — nadru, haakh and the local Brassicas are hard to source, so the dishes have been rebuilt around what a plains market sells, and the language is passing out of daily use in the generation now growing up outside.
