Nati, Kangri formलोक
The Pahari chain dance — dancers link at the waist or shoulder and move in a slow serpentine to a fixed drum-and-shehnai cycle that accelerates only at the end. Kangra dances it, but the form belongs most strongly to Kullu, Mandi and the Sutlej valleys, and a Kangri nati is recognisably the western, gentler end of it.
कौन करता है: Mixed village lines, men and women. मौका: Fairs, weddings, devta gatherings
Jhamakdaलोक
A women-only courtyard dance sung and clapped rather than accompanied, with teasing and satirical verses aimed at the in-laws. It is danced without men present, which is why it has stayed largely undocumented.
कौन करता है: Women of the household and the neighbourhood. मौका: Weddings, in the nights before the ceremony
Gaddi danceलोक
Danced in the chola and dora with the rope still wound, in a slow circle to the dhol and the flute — closer to Bharmour's repertoire than to the valley floor's, because the community moves between the two.
कौन करता है: Gaddi men and women. मौका: Fairs, and the return from summer pasture
Chamअनुष्ठान
Masked ritual dance in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, performed at Namgyal and the Gyuto monastery at Sidhbari. It arrived in the valley in 1960 and is now part of its calendar.
कौन करता है: Monks of the exile monasteries. मौका: Losar and monastic calendar days
संगीत
Dholru
Songs sung to a small double-headed drum through the month of Chaitra by hereditary singer families who walk village to village announcing the new year and the coming spring, and are paid in grain. It is a calendar announcement as much as a song, and it is disappearing with the households that used to pay for it.
Bhaint
Devotional songs to the goddess, sung at Brajeshwari, Jwalamukhi and Chamunda and through the Navratri nights. The form travels down into Punjab with the pilgrims and comes back changed.
The devta ensemble
Karnal and ranasingha — long straight and curved brass horns — with shehnai, dhol and nagara. It is temple and procession music, played by hereditary musician families, and the horn calls are specific enough that villagers can tell which deity is approaching before they can see the palanquin.
Pahari nati tunes
A stock of fixed instrumental cycles used for the chain dance, each attached to a locality, learned by ear and now also circulating through Himachali pop recordings that keep the tunes and change everything else.
Tibetan liturgical chant and Lhamo
The deep overtone chant of the Gyuto tradition and the Lhamo opera repertoire, taught at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts at McLeodganj since the early 1960s specifically to keep the forms alive outside Tibet.
रंगमंच
The Andretta open-air stage
Norah Richards, an Irish theatre worker who had already helped start Punjabi-language drama at Lahore, settled at Andretta below the Dhauladhar in the 1930s and built a mud-and-thatch open-air theatre there. It is why a village of a few hundred people has a theatre and a painters' colony.
Bhagat and swang
Rough village theatre performed at fairs — improvised sketches, mimicry of officials and moneylenders, and stock comic roles, staged on the ground with the audience in a ring.
शिल्प
Kangra painting जीआई योग्य Guler, Nurpur, Sujanpur Tira, Alampur
The mature phase of Pahari painting, developed in the workshops of Nainsukh's family at Guler and taken to its height under Sansar Chand Katoch between about 1780 and 1805. Its subjects are the Gita Govinda, the Bhagavata Purana, Nala and Damayanti and the Baramasa. After the Gurkha invasion of 1806 and the Sikh annexation that followed, the patronage collapsed and the painter families dispersed across the hills.
सामग्री: Handmade paper, mineral and vegetable pigment, squirrel-hair brush. तकनीक: Ground and burnished paper, a preliminary drawing in fine line, opaque pigment laid flat in layers, gold and silver applied last, and a final burnishing from the reverse with an agate. The distinguishing mark is the line — a single unbroken contour from forehead to nose tip, and a cool green-and-white palette against monsoon skies.
Thangka painting, appliqué and statue-making Sidhpur and Dharamshala
Rebuilt in exile as an institutional training system rather than a family one, most visibly at the Norbulingka Institute at Sidhpur, founded in 1988 to teach the Tibetan literary and craft arts to a generation born outside Tibet.
सामग्री: Cotton ground, mineral pigment, brocade, copper sheet. तकनीक: Iconometric grid drawing to fixed proportional canons, mineral pigment on sized cotton, brocade mounting, and repoussé copper work for statues.
Khaniyara slate Khaniyara, near Dharamshala
The grey roof of the entire region comes out of a few quarries on the Dhauladhar foot. Slate is the only roofing that survives both three metres of rain and a metre of snow, and the quarrying has been contentious because it sits in the same fragile slope that produces the landslides.
सामग्री: Roofing slate. तकनीक: Quarried in beds, split along cleavage by hand and trimmed to overlapping courses.
Deodar carpentry and kath-kuni building जीआई योग्य Upper Kangra and Chota Bhangal
The building system of the whole western Himalaya, and best preserved here in the upper valleys where cement arrived late. Deodar is used because it resists rot and insects almost indefinitely — beams are routinely salvaged and reused from houses two centuries older.
सामग्री: Deodar cedar and undressed stone. तकनीक: Alternating courses of dry-laid stone and paired cedar beams cross-tied at the corners, with no mortar anywhere. The timber lets the wall flex in an earthquake instead of shearing.
Andretta studio pottery Andretta, near Palampur
A working pottery and teaching studio at Andretta, descended from the Delhi Blue studio tradition, which is how a village below the Dhauladhar became a place people go to learn to throw pots.
सामग्री: Local clay and slip glaze. तकनीक: Wheel-thrown functional ware, reduction-fired.
Silver ornament making Kangra town, Palampur, Baijnath
Sustained by the Gaddi and hill wedding market, where a bride's silver is still weighed rather than styled, and by the pilgrimage trade around the goddess temples.
सामग्री: Silver, sometimes alloyed low. तकनीक: Chasing, repoussé and granulation on sheet, with cast components for the heavier pieces.
