Subtropical at the foot and temperate on the ridges — a range of nearly 2,000 m inside sixty kilometres. Jammu city touches 44 °C in June and drops to 5 °C in January; Patnitop, 100 km away and 2,000 m up, holds snow. Rainfall is around 1,100 mm at the Shivalik crest and falls off sharply on the kandi apron, where the same storm runs off the gravel instead of soaking in.
