Vaishno Deviतीर्थReasi

A cave shrine at about 5,200 feet inside the Trikuta massif, where the deity is represented not by an image but by three natural rock pindis. The classical approach is a walk of roughly thirteen kilometres from Katra, now supplemented by a ropeway to the Bhairon temple above the shrine. It receives on the order of a crore of visitors in a good year, which makes it one of the most-visited religious sites in India and the single largest economic fact in the region.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–November and March–April; avoid the Navratri peaks if crowds matter. कैसे पहुँचें: Rail to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), then on foot or by pony, palanquin or ropeway.

Bahu Fort and Bawe Wali MataविरासतJammu

A fort on the left bank of the Tawi, attributed in local tradition to Raja Bahulochan and rebuilt in its present form by the Dogra rulers in the nineteenth century. Inside it is the Kali temple known as Bawe Wali Mata, which the city treats as its presiding deity — Tuesdays and Sundays bring queues that have nothing to do with tourism. The terraced Bagh-e-Bahu garden below it looks across the river to the old city.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March.

BasohliविरासतKathua

A small town above the Ravi, seat of a hill state from the sixteenth century, and the place where Pahari painting begins. The Rasamanjari illustrations made here around 1680 under Raja Kirpal Pal set the school's conventions — hot red grounds, flat colour, exaggerated eyes and beetle-wing inlay. The old palace is largely gone and much of the surviving painting is in museums elsewhere, which is worth knowing before travelling.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–April.

Mansar and Surinsar lakesप्रकृतिUdhampur and Jammu

Two spring-fed lakes in wooded Shivalik folds, treated as a pair and often given as the origin of the name Duggar. Mansar has a Sheshnag shrine on its bank around which newly married couples take three circuits, and both are Ramsar-recognised wetlands.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March.

Purmandalतीर्थSamba

A temple town on the Devika, a river that runs underground for most of its course and is treated locally as the Ganga's northern counterpart. Its Shivratri fair is the largest in the Samba belt, and pilgrims dig into the sand of the bed to reach the water.

Raghunath Temple complexतीर्थJammu

A cluster of seven shrines in the middle of Jammu's old bazaar, begun in 1835 under Gulab Singh and completed under Ranbir Singh. Its interior galleries are lined with niches holding lakhs of saligrams, and its library held one of the more substantial Sanskrit and Persian manuscript collections in the north-west.

Mubarak MandiविरासतJammu

The layered palace complex of the Dogra rulers above the Tawi, built and rebuilt from the early nineteenth century in a mixture of Rajasthani, Mughal and colonial Baroque idioms. It is under long-running conservation after decades of neglect, and parts remain propped rather than restored.

Amar MahalविरासतJammu

An 1890s palace built for Raja Amar Singh in the manner of a French chateau, on a bluff over the Tawi, now a museum with a Pahari miniature collection and a library.

AkhnoorविरासतJammu

A Chenab-bank town with a riverside fort and, at nearby Manda, an occupation record reaching back into the Harappan period. The Akhnoor terracotta heads found here — modelled clay faces in a Gandhara-influenced manner — are the region's most important early sculpture.

Patnitop and Sanasarपहाड़Udhampur

A deodar-covered ridge at about 2,000 m on the old Jammu–Srinagar road, and the saucer-shaped meadow of Sanasar beside it. Snow from late December, and the point where the region's climate stops being subtropical.

सबसे अच्छा समय: April–June and December–February.

Sarthal Deviतीर्थKathua

A forest shrine high above the Bani valley in the upper Kathua hills, reached by a long climb through deodar and reachable by road only in the warmer months. Its fair draws the Bani and Basohli belt rather than outside pilgrims, and the surrounding forest is among the least-visited in the region.

सबसे अच्छा समय: May–September.

Jhiriतीर्थJammu

A village west of Jammu where the largest rural fair in the region is held each Kartik Purnima in memory of Baba Jitto. Farmers arrive with cattle and with grain, and the Karak ballad is sung through the nights.

Shiv Khoriतीर्थReasi

A natural limestone cave running about 200 m into the hill with a self-formed lingam at its end. The passage narrows enough in places that pilgrims pass one at a time.

Chenab rail bridge at KauriविरासतReasi

A steel arch carrying the railway some 359 m above the Chenab — higher above its river than any other railway bridge in the world — completed as part of the line pushed north from Udhampur. It is visible from the road approach and has become the most photographed object in the district.

Ramnagar and the kalari villagesविरासतUdhampur

A small hill town with a nineteenth-century Dogra palace carrying wall paintings in the Pahari manner, and the acknowledged home of kalari. The cheese is still made in household quantities in the villages around it.
