Jammu Duggar · Western Himalaya & Trans-Himalaya
Dress in Duggar reads the altitude. On the plain and the kandi it is essentially the Punjab wardrobe — suthan or salwar with a kurta, a long chunni, cotton in summer — and as the road climbs the Chenab approach the cotton is replaced by locally spun wool, the chunni by a heavier head-cloth, and silver replaces gold. The distinctly Dogra elements are the men's turban style, the silver ornament vocabulary of the hill households, and the woollen goods of the Basohli belt.
क्या पहना जाता है
A narrow ankle-gathered trouser worn under a long kurta with a full chunni. The gathered ankle is the older hill cut and predates the loose Punjabi salwar that has largely replaced it in towns.
किस मौके पर: Everyday and festive
A turban tied flat and wide with the fan raised at the front, distinct from the pointed Rajasthani safa and from the rounded Punjabi pagg. It is still worn at weddings and by the men who carry the palanquins at village deity fairs.
किस मौके पर: Weddings, ceremonial, kul-devta observances
Cotton in the plain; in the hills a coarse wool loi or pattu is thrown over the shoulder and doubles as a blanket. The loi is woven on narrow pit looms in the foothill villages.
किस मौके पर: Everyday, winter
A long kameez over churidar for men with an embroidered skullcap; for women a heavily embroidered kurta, a wide head-cloth and substantial silver — coin necklaces, anklets and heavy earrings supported by a cord over the head. Wealth carried on the body is a practical response to a life spent moving twice a year.
किस मौके पर: Everyday
The white woollen coat gathered at the waist by a long black wool rope, worn where the Gaddi grazing circuit crosses into the region's northern hills. It belongs properly to Chamba and Bharmour and appears here at the margin.
किस मौके पर: Everyday and migration
बुनाई और कपड़े
Hand-spun and hand-woven pashmina shawls, stoles and woollen goods made in and around Basohli, largely by women working on domestic looms. Registered as a geographical indication in 2023 — a Jammu-side pashmina tradition distinct from the Kashmir Valley trade with which it is usually confused.
Coarse undyed sheep-wool blanket cloth woven on narrow pit and frame looms in the foothill villages, cut into shoulder wraps and floor rugs. Unbranded, unregistered and still made for household use rather than for sale.
Appliquéd and felted floor coverings, a Kashmir Valley craft that reaches down the highway corridor and is made in small quantity on the Duggar side.
