Kurukshetra and Brahma Sarovarतीर्थKurukshetra
A tank roughly a kilometre long with a masonry ghat on all four sides, and the centre of a circuit of some four dozen tirthas spread across the surrounding plain. The Mahabharata's battlefield is located here by tradition, and the town's ritual calendar is organised around solar eclipses, when hundreds of thousands bathe at the sarovar in a single day.
सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March; eclipse dates draw the largest crowds.
Jyotisarतीर्थKurukshetra
A banyan on the Kurukshetra–Pehowa road identified by tradition as the spot where the Bhagavad Gita was delivered. A marble chariot marks it, and the site anchors the Gita Jayanti observances each winter.
Sthaneshwar Mahadev and Sheikh Chilli's tomb, ThanesarविरासतKurukshetra
An old Shaiva temple and tank beside a seventeenth-century Mughal-period tomb complex with a marble dome and a madrasa court, standing on the Harsha ka Tila mound — a settlement sequence running from the Kushana period onward, with the whole of north Indian history stacked in one field.
Panipat battlefields and Kala AmbविरासतPanipat
Three battles that decided the control of north India were fought on this ground — in 1526, 1556 and 1761 — because the Yamuna, the Delhi road and the open plain meet here and an army coming from the north-west had nowhere else to be intercepted. Kala Amb marks the 1761 field; the Kabuli Bagh mosque was built after 1526; and the town museum sets out all three.
Dargah of Bu Ali Shah Qalandarतीर्थPanipat
The shrine of a thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Sufi poet, and the reason Panipat has a Persian and Urdu literary layer that the surrounding countryside does not. Its urs draws pilgrims from across north India.
Pehowaतीर्थKurukshetra
Prithudaka on the Saraswati — a town whose principal business is pind-daan for the dead, and specifically for those who died violently or without rites. Its Chaitra Chaudas fair and its long-established horse and cattle market run in the same weeks.
RakhigarhiविरासतHisar
A Harappan settlement spread over nine mounds beside a Ghaggar palaeochannel, covering an area that puts it among the largest sites of the civilisation known — a ranking that has shifted as survey extents have been revised. Excavation has produced a planned street grid, drains, a seal workshop and cemeteries; a genome sequenced from one burial here and published in 2019 showed no Steppe pastoralist ancestry, which reframed a long-running argument. A site museum has been built at the village.
सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February. कैसे पहुँचें: About 60 km east of Hisar; the last stretch is a village road.
SurajkundविरासतFaridabad
A tenth-century amphitheatre-shaped masonry reservoir attributed to the Tomar rulers, cut into the Aravalli rock so that runoff from the ridge collects in it. The annual crafts mela is held on the ground beside it.
Sultanpur National Parkवन्यजीवGurugram
A shallow seasonal wetland on the Gurugram–Jhajjar road that fills with migratory waterfowl from November — bar-headed geese, flamingos, pelicans and Siberian visitors. It was designated a Ramsar site of international importance in 2021.
सबसे अच्छा समय: December–February.
Morni Hills and Tikkar Taalपहाड़Panchkula
The region's only true hill country, a Shivalik block rising above 1,200 m with two adjacent lakes at different levels and a chir-and-oak forest. It is the exception that proves how flat everything else is.
सबसे अच्छा समय: September–March.
FarrukhnagarविरासतGurugram
A walled town laid out in 1732 by Faujdar Khan around a salt trade — the Sheesh Mahal, the Ghaus Ali Shah baoli and the Delhi Gate survive. The salt works that paid for it were shut down under colonial salt policy in the nineteenth century, and the town has not grown since.
Pinjore GardensविरासतPanchkula
A seventeenth-century terraced Mughal garden at the foot of the Shivaliks, built on seven descending levels so a single spring-fed channel runs the whole cascade. Later held by the rulers of Patiala.
Dhosi HillविरासतMahendragarh
An extinct volcanic cone standing alone above the southern plain, with a crater pond and a temple complex, associated in tradition with the sage Chyavana. It is visible for tens of kilometres in a landscape with nothing else vertical in it.
Hansi and Asigarh FortविरासतHisar
A brick fort on a mound with occupation levels running back well over a thousand years, and the town where George Thomas, an Irish adventurer, briefly ran a state of his own around 1800.
Agroha MoundविरासतHisar
An extensive mound with material from the third century BCE onwards, including a coin-issuing settlement. It is also the origin place claimed by the Agrawal merchant community, which keeps the site continuously funded.
Nuh, Firozpur Jhirka and the Mewat hillsप्रकृतिNuh
Aravalli ridges, bunded catchment ponds and the villages of the Meo tract. Kotla lake and the ridge road towards Alwar give the best view of a landform that is otherwise easy to miss from the highway.
Tosham HillविरासतBhiwani
A rhyolite outcrop quarried since antiquity, with rock inscriptions, a rock-cut tank and a Baba Mungipa temple on top. The stone from here travelled a long way in the early historic period.
