Basilica of Bom Jesusविरासतयूनेस्कोNorth Goa (Old Goa)

Completed in 1605 and left with its laterite facade unplastered, which is why it looks unlike every other church in Old Goa. It holds the body of St Francis Xavier in a silver casket above a marble and jasper monument, brought down for public veneration in an exposition held roughly once a decade — the most recent ran from November 2024 into January 2025.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.

Sé Cathedral of Santa Catarinaविरासतयूनेस्कोNorth Goa (Old Goa)

The largest church in Goa, dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria because the city was taken on her feast day in November 1510. One of its two bell towers collapsed in the eighteenth century and was never rebuilt, so the facade is deliberately asymmetric; the surviving Golden Bell is the one still rung.

Church and Convent of St Francis of Assisi, and the St Augustine towerविरासतयूनेस्कोNorth Goa (Old Goa)

The Franciscan church holds carved and gilded woodwork and a floor of Portuguese gravestones; the adjoining convent is the Archaeological Survey's museum. A few hundred metres away, the forty-six-metre stump of St Augustine's is all that is left of a church abandoned in 1835 and collapsed in stages afterwards — Old Goa read in reverse.

Ponda temple clusterतीर्थNorth Goa (Ponda)

Shri Manguesh at Priol, Shri Shanta Durga at Kavlem, Shri Mahalasa at Mardol, Shri Nagesh, Shri Ramnath and others within a few kilometres of each other. None of these deities originated here. They were carried inland from Cortalim, Quelossim, Verna and other Old Conquest villages in the sixteenth century, when temples there were being dismantled, into territory then outside Portuguese control. The buildings that resulted are architecturally unlike temples anywhere else in India — octagonal lamp towers, barrel-vaulted halls, balustrades and chandeliers — because they were rebuilt in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by people fluent in the European vocabulary around them.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March, and at each shrine's zatra.

Fontainhas and Sao Tome, PanajiशहरीNorth Goa (Panaji)

The Latin Quarter — narrow lanes of nineteenth-century houses in ochre, indigo and green, with overhanging balcaos, oyster-shell windows and azulejo street plaques. It is a state-notified conservation zone rather than a museum district, and most of the houses are lived in. The colour rule is not decorative folklore; lime-washed walls were repainted after each monsoon and the pigments available locally set the palette.

Fort AguadaविरासतNorth Goa (Bardez)

Built from 1612 above the Mandovi mouth to stop Dutch and Maratha shipping, and named for the freshwater spring inside it that watered passing fleets — the water, not the guns, was the strategic asset. Its freestanding lighthouse dates from the nineteenth century, and the lower fort served as Goa's central jail until 2015.

Chapora FortविरासतNorth Goa (Bardez)

A laterite shell on a headland above the Chapora river, rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1717 over an earlier Bijapuri fort and changing hands repeatedly with the Marathas. Almost nothing survives inside; the reason to climb is the river mouth and the reason it is crowded is a Hindi film.

Divar IslandविरासतNorth Goa (Tiswadi)

Reached only by ferry, and quiet enough that the ferry is the point. Divar held major temples before 1510; the Church of Our Lady of Compassion stands on one of the sites, and the hill chapel's terrace looks over the whole estuary. Its Bonderam festival in August re-enacts a village boundary dispute with flags and mock fights.

कैसे पहुँचें: Free vehicle ferries from Old Goa and Ribandar, running through the day.

Chorao Island and the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuaryवन्यजीवNorth Goa (Tiswadi)

Mangrove on the Mandovi, walked on a raised boardwalk or seen from a canoe at high tide. Kingfishers, herons, egrets and winter migrants, and the clearest place to see what khazan reclamation converted and what it left.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–March.

Dudhsagar Fallsप्रकृतिSouth Goa (Sanguem)

A four-tier fall of roughly 310 metres on the Mandovi at the Goa–Karnataka boundary, inside the Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary. The Konkan-to-Deccan railway crosses its face on a viaduct, which is why the classic photograph is taken from a train. It is at full volume from July to September and access is regulated.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–December, once the roads reopen and the flow is still strong.

Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Parkवन्यजीवSouth Goa (Sanguem)

Goa's largest protected area, evergreen and moist deciduous forest on the ghat slope, holding gaur, sambar, leopard, the Malabar giant squirrel and the hornbills. It also contains Tambdi Surla, a small twelfth-century basalt Mahadeva temple of the Kadamba period — the only pre-Portuguese temple in Goa to survive intact, because it stands deep enough in the forest that nobody reached it.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March.

Arvalem caves and waterfallविरासतNorth Goa (Bicholim)

Rock-cut chambers in laterite, ascribed locally to the Pandavas and by archaeologists to an early Buddhist or Brahmanical excavation, with a seasonal waterfall and the Rudreshwar temple beside them. The rock is soft enough to cut with hand tools, which is why laterite Goa has caves at all.

Usgalimal rock carvingsविरासतSouth Goa (Sanguem)

Petroglyphs pecked into the laterite bed of the Kushavati river at Pansaimol — bulls, deer, a labyrinth, human figures and cup marks, exposed when the river is low and submerged when it is not. They are prehistoric, were only recorded in the early 1990s, and are the oldest human record in the region by a very long margin.

सबसे अच्छा समय: December–May, when the river bed is exposed.

Chandor and the Menezes Braganza houseविरासतSouth Goa (Salcete)

Chandor was Chandrapura, a Kadamba capital, long before it was a Salcete village. Its Braganza house runs the length of one side of the square, divided between two branches of the family who still live in and show their own wings — a ballroom, a library, Chinese and Belgian imports, and a relic of St Francis Xavier in the family chapel. It is the clearest surviving picture of what the Goan landed household actually was.

कैसे पहुँचें: About 15 km east of Margao; the house is open to visitors on the family's own schedule.

Cabo de Rama and the southern beachesसमुद्र तटSouth Goa (Canacona and Quepem)

A headland fort held successively by local rulers, the Bijapur Sultanate, the Marathas and the Portuguese, above a coast of small bays — Agonda, Palolem, Patnem and Galgibaga. Galgibaga and Morjim beaches are olive ridley nesting sites and are lit and fenced accordingly between November and March.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.

Netravali and Cotigao sanctuariesप्रकृतिSouth Goa (Sanguem and Canacona)

The southern ghat forests, quieter than Mollem. Netravali has the bubbling lake at Budbudyanchi Tali, where gas rises through a temple tank, and both hold Velip and Kunbi villages whose sacred groves — deuracho rai — are the oldest conservation institution in the region.

Mapusa Friday marketशहरीNorth Goa (Bardez)

The weekly market that supplies half of north Goa — chouriço, para, kokum, bottled recheado masala, banana varieties, hand-thrown pots and toddy vinegar in reused bottles. It runs every Friday morning and is the single best place to see the two kitchens buying from the same stalls.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Friday mornings.

Goa Chitra, BenaulimविरासतSouth Goa (Salcete)

A privately assembled ethnographic collection of Goan agricultural and household implements — khazan tools, toddy-tapping gear, oil presses, palanquins — set beside a working organic farm. It is the only place the material culture of the working landscape is collected in one room.
