Konkani Speech Corridor
Konkani itself, unbroken from the Terekhol down to Kochi — Malvani in Sindhudurg, Goan Konkani in its several varieties, Karwari and the Saraswat Konkani of Uttara Kannada, the Konkani of the Mangalorean Catholics, and the Konkani of the Kochi and Kerala Saraswat households.
Goa writes it in Devanagari officially and in Roman on stage; Mangalore's Catholics write it in Kannada script and in Roman; Kerala's Konkani speakers use Malayalam script. The spoken language remains mutually intelligible at the edges of that spread; the written traditions do not meet.
Saraswat Migration Corridor
The families and the deities that moved south from the Old Conquests from the sixteenth century, taking with them the coconut-and-kokum fish curry, sol kadhi, sanna and the temple institutions that reorganised around them at Ponda, Gokarna and along the Canara coast.
In Goa the moved deities kept their original village names and their Old Conquest patrons return annually for the zatra. In Canara and Kerala the same households became a merchant and professional class, and the cooking lost the teppal and picked up curry leaf.
Portuguese Culinary Corridor
The vinegar kitchen — vinha d'alhos curing, sorpotel, balchao, sausage, egg-and-coconut layered puddings and bread — carried along the whole Portuguese network rather than diffused overland.
The East Indian kitchen of Vasai and Bombay kept the bottle masala and lost the vinegar emphasis; Mangalorean Catholic cooking kept pork and sanna but sours with tamarind; Kerala's Portuguese inheritance shows in bread and in vindalu-type preparations around Kochi. Goa alone kept toddy vinegar as the default household acid.
Kokum and Teppal Corridor
Garcinia indica for souring and Zanthoxylum rhetsa for its cold prickle, together with the wet-ground coconut masala that carries them, from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg through Goa into Uttara Kannada.
Malvani dry-roasts its masala to a powder; Goa grinds it wet; Canara adds uppage alongside kokum and uses more tamarind. Teppal thins out south of the Kali and is almost absent by Mangaluru.
Palm Distilling Corridor
Toddy tapping, toddy vinegar, toddy-leavened rice cakes and pot distillation of cashew and coconut sap, along the whole coastal palm belt.
The technique is common to the coast but the legal position is not. Feni is licensed, protected and openly sold only in Goa; in the neighbouring Konkan and Canara districts palm distilling is restricted or prohibited, so the same craft is a heritage industry on one side of a line and a police matter on the other.
Mandovi Ghat Corridor
The pass route between the Deccan and the Goan ports — Anmod and Chorla by road, the Braganza ghat by rail past Dudhsagar — down which areca, pepper, sugar and horses moved for centuries, and up which Goan iron ore later did not.
The Karnataka side of the Mhadei catchment is Kannada-speaking within a few kilometres of the crest, and the river's water allocation is the subject of a long-running interstate dispute before a tribunal. The forest, the hornbills and the Mhadei sanctuary are continuous across it.
Goan Diaspora Corridor
Konkani-speaking Goans to Bombay from the nineteenth century — where the kudd, a village club-house providing shared lodging to migrants from one parish, became the organising institution — and onward to East Africa, the Gulf, Portugal, Britain and Canada. Tiatr was born in Bombay, not in Goa.
The Bombay Goan community kept Roman-script Konkani, the club system and the band tradition; the Gulf and African migrations were later and household-based. Those born in Goa before 19 December 1961, and their descendants, may register Portuguese citizenship, which continues to shape emigration decisions.
