नृत्य

Jhumur (jhumair)लोक

A linked-arm line dance moving in a slow, low, side-stepping rhythm to the madal drum, with the line lengthening as people join. It came from the Chota Nagpur plateau with the labour recruitment of the nineteenth century and became the signature public form of the gardens; the songs attached to it took on plantation subjects the plateau versions never had.

कौन करता है: Adivasi tea-garden communities. मौका: Karam, weddings, the end of the working week

Karam danceअनुष्ठान

Danced all night around a branch of the karam tree planted in the courtyard, with the sisters of the household fasting for their brothers and the branch immersed at dawn. The dance is the vigil — it is the means of staying awake through the ritual, not an entertainment attached to it.

कौन करता है: Oraon, Munda, Santhal and Kharia households. मौका: Karam Puja, in Bhadra

Sarhul danceजनजातीय

Danced at the sarna grove when the sal comes into bloom, marking the point at which the earth may be ploughed again. The dance follows the priest's offering and moves from grove to village.

कौन करता है: Oraon and Munda communities. मौका: Sarhul, when the sal flowers

Bagurumbaलोक

A women's dance in dokhona and aronai with the arms extended and the cloth held wide, the steps and the wing shapes taken directly from butterflies and birds. Accompanied by the kham drum, the siphung flute and the serja fiddle.

कौन करता है: Bodo-Kachari communities including the Mech. मौका: Bwisagu and social gatherings

Hudumअनुष्ठान

A rain-calling rite performed by women alone in a field at night, with song and dance addressed to Hudum Deo, from which men are excluded entirely. It is one of the oldest strata of Rajbanshi practice and sits outside the Brahminical calendar altogether.

कौन करता है: Rajbanshi women. मौका: Drought, at night

Tusu immersion danceलोक

The decorated Tusu frame is carried to the river singing, danced around at the bank and set afloat. The songs are composed fresh each year and are frequently about the year that has just passed.

कौन करता है: Adivasi and Rajbanshi women. मौका: Makar Sankranti, mid-January

संगीत

Bhawaiya

The great song form of this belt — long-breathed melodies of separation sung to the dotara, associated with the moishal (buffalo herder) and the gariyal (cart driver), the two occupations that kept men away from home for months. Its identifying ornament is the bhanga sur, a deliberate break or catch in the sustained note, commonly explained as the jolt of a cart on a rutted road entering the voice.

Chatka

Bhawaiya's fast, short-metre counterpart — teasing, comic and often bawdy, sung at the same gatherings to break the weight of the slow songs.

Kushan gan

Rajbanshi narrative performance of the Ramayana, led by a mul or gidal who sings, speaks and acts all the roles with a bena fiddle in hand, backed by a dohar chorus. A single cycle can run several nights.

Sadri song of the gardens

Songs made in the plantation lingua franca rather than in any of the mother tongues that fed it — jhumur tunes carrying words about recruitment, the sardar, the garden and the impossibility of going home.

Bodo and Rabha instrumental ensembles

The kham drum, siphung flute and serja bowed fiddle, played for Bwisagu and for household rites. The serja is played resting on the knee, and the tuning is set to the singer rather than to a fixed pitch.

रंगमंच

Kushan pala

The staged form of Kushan gan — an all-night Ramayana performance in the open with minimal props, in which the gidal switches between narration, character and direct address to the audience. It is the principal theatrical tradition of the Rajbanshi belt.

Jatra

The Bengali travelling theatre reaches the Dooars towns and the garden clubs in the winter season, playing on an open square stage with the audience on all four sides and a brass ensemble in the corner.

शिल्प

CTC tea manufacture Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and the Terai

This belt produces a large share of India's tea by volume, mostly as CTC sold by grade rather than by garden. Unlike Darjeeling on the ridge above, Dooars and Terai tea carries no geographical indication, which is a substantial part of why the same day's work is worth so much less here.

सामग्री: Camellia sinensis var. assamica — the Assam-type bush. तकनीक: Withering, then passing the leaf through pairs of toothed rollers turning at different speeds that crush, tear and curl it into small granules, followed by rapid oxidation and firing. The granule gives a fast, strong, colour-heavy liquor that takes milk and sugar, which is what the domestic market buys.

Kalonunia rice cultivation जीआई पंजीकृत Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar

Registered as a geographical indication in 2024. Grown in small acreages by households that kept the seed through the decades when nobody was paying for aroma.

सामग्री: An indigenous short-grain aromatic rice landrace. तकनीक: Transplanted and harvested on the old photoperiod-sensitive calendar, threshed and stored unpolished so the aroma survives. The plant is tall and low-yielding, which is exactly why it was nearly displaced by high-yielding varieties.

Rajbanshi cane and bamboo work जीआई योग्य Across the Dooars and Terai

A working technology rather than a decorative craft. The fish traps in particular are designed around the behaviour of specific fish in specific depths of water.

सामग्री: Bamboo, mutha cane and reed. तकनीक: Split-and-plait construction for baskets, grain stores, winnowing fans and the polo and khaloi — the conical trap and the waist-slung fish creel used in flooded paddy.

Sitalpati mat weaving जीआई योग्य Western Dooars and Cooch Behar

A mat cool enough to sleep on through a foothill summer, and the standard gift at a Rajbanshi wedding.

सामग्री: Mutha cane (Schumannianthus dichotomus). तकनीक: The cane stem is split and the outer skin peeled into fine strips, dried, and woven damp so it dries taut. The grade depends entirely on how fine the splitting is, and the finest are woven by a handful of families.

Bodo and Mech handloom जीआई योग्य Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri forest fringe

Near-universal domestic weaving among Bodo-Kachari households, now partly commercialised through self-help-group clusters.

सामग्री: Cotton, eri silk and acrylic yarn. तकनीक: Throw-shuttle loom weaving with supplementary-weft motifs counted in as the cloth grows, so the design exists only in the weaver's memory and in the finished piece.

Wood and forest produce work The forest fringe villages

The building tradition of the belt — a house frame of sal posts, split-bamboo walls plastered with mud, and a thatch or corrugated roof, raised on a plinth against the flood.

सामग्री: Sal, sissoo and bamboo. तकनीक: Hand-sawn and adzed joinery for house frames, ploughs, carts and drums, and bamboo split for walls and granaries.
