Amber Fortविरासतयूनेस्कोJaipur

The Kachhwaha capital before Jaipur, built up from 1592 under Man Singh I on a ridge above Maota lake, with the mirrored Jai Mandir at its centre. The house's alliance with the Mughal court — sealed by marriage in 1562 and maintained by generations of command in Mughal armies — paid for this building, and is the exact policy that Mewar refused. Part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage inscription of 2013.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March.

Jaipur walled cityशहरीयूनेस्कोJaipur

Founded on 18 November 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II and laid out by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya on a grid of nine wards with streets in fixed widths and trades allocated by street. Painted terracotta pink in 1876 for a royal visit and kept that way since by municipal rule. Inscribed as a World Heritage city in 2019 for the plan itself rather than for any single building in it.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–March. कैसे पहुँचें: Jaipur Junction (JP) and Jaipur International Airport (JAI), both inside the city.

Jantar Mantarविरासतयूनेस्कोJaipur

A masonry observatory completed around 1734 — nineteen instruments built at architectural scale because Jai Singh had concluded that brass instruments were too small to be read finely. The Vrihat Samrat Yantra, a 27 m gnomon, resolves local solar time to about two seconds. The Rashivalaya, twelve separate instruments each aligned to a zodiacal sign, exists nowhere else.

सबसे अच्छा समय: A clear morning, and take the guide.

Hawa MahalविरासतJaipur

Built in 1799 under Sawai Pratap Singh to a design by Lal Chand Ustad. It is a screen rather than a building — five storeys of pierced jharokhas, in places only one room deep, added to the back of the zenana so that women in purdah could watch processions in the bazaar below. The honeycomb also drives air through the structure, which is where the name comes from.

Jaigarh Fort and the Jaivana cannonविरासतJaipur

The fortified arsenal on the ridge above Amber, with a working foundry inside it. The Jaivana, cast there in 1720, was among the largest wheeled cannon in the world and, so far as the record goes, was never fired in action — the arsenal existed to make the point rather than to be used.

Nahargarh FortविरासतJaipur

Built from 1734 on the ridge overlooking the new city, less a fortress than a retreat and a lookout. Its Madhavendra Bhawan, added in the 1880s, is a set of nine identical suites for nine queens, each connected to the ruler's rooms by a separate corridor so that none of them need meet.

Galtajiतीर्थJaipur

A temple complex wedged into a narrow gorge east of Jaipur, built around a spring that fills a chain of kunds. It is worked as a bathing site and is heavily colonised by rhesus macaques, which is what most visitors come for and the reason the site is under pressure.

SamodeविरासतJaipur

A Rajput thikana seat in the hills north of Jaipur, whose Durbar Hall and Sheesh Mahal carry some of the best surviving araish fresco work in the region — the same technique as Shekhawati's, executed for a court rather than a merchant, and maintained rather than abandoned.

SanganerशहरीJaipur

A printing and papermaking town absorbed into Jaipur's southern edge. The block printers and the Kagzi papermakers work in adjoining quarters, and the town also holds the eleventh-century Sanghiji Jain temple, which is older than everything else here by six hundred years.

BagruशहरीJaipur

A printing village 30 km west of Jaipur, where the Chhipa quarter still runs the full dabu sequence outdoors — printing yard, dye vats, washing, and cloth spread on open ground to dry.

NawalgarhविरासतJhunjhunu

Founded in 1737 and the best single introduction to Shekhawati, with the densest surviving fresco work and two havelis run as museums — the Podar and the Morarka. The painted subjects here span the whole shift, from Krishna cycles to steam trains and motor cars.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.

MandawaविरासतJhunjhunu

Founded in the mid-eighteenth century and now the most visited of the fresco towns, with several havelis converted to hotels. The Murmuria and Goenka frontages carry the frequently reproduced images of a train, a motorcar and European figures painted by artists who had seen none of them.

FatehpurविरासतSikar

Founded in the fifteenth century by the Kayamkhani nawabs and later a merchant town, so its havelis sit on an older Muslim-ruled street plan. One large haveli was bought and restored from 1998 by the French artist Nadine Le Prince and is open as a cultural centre — the first serious conservation intervention in the belt.

Ramgarh ShekhawatiविरासतSikar

Founded in 1791 by Poddar merchants who walked out of Churu after a dispute with its ruler and built a town of their own — an entire settlement founded by a commercial quarrel. It has the region's densest cluster of frescoed chhatris and is the least restored of the major towns.

LakshmangarhविरासतSikar

Laid out in the early nineteenth century on a grid modelled directly on Jaipur's, beneath a fort built on a single rock outcrop. It is the clearest demonstration that the 1727 plan was understood locally as a template rather than as a one-off.

Khatushyamjiतीर्थSikar

The shrine of Barbarik as Shyam, and one of the largest pilgrimage draws in north India. The Phalgun mela brings enormous crowds on foot, and the walking pilgrim traffic from Delhi and Haryana runs through much of the year rather than only at the fair.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Phalgun (February–March) for the fair; any other time to actually see the town.

Salasar Balajiतीर्थChuru

A Hanuman shrine established in the mid-eighteenth century, distinctive for depicting the deity with a beard and moustache — an iconography effectively unique to this temple. Its Chaitra and Ashwin full-moon fairs draw crowds comparable to Khatushyamji's.

Sambhar Salt Lake and Shakambhari Deviप्रकृतिJaipur and Nagaur

A shallow saline basin with no outlet, worked for salt for well over a thousand years and still producing at scale through evaporation pans served by a narrow-gauge line. It is a Ramsar site, listed in 1990, and fills with flamingos and other waterbirds when the monsoon is good. The Shakambhari temple on its edge is the kuldevi shrine of the Chauhans, and local tradition makes the lake the goddess's own doing.

सबसे अच्छा समय: December–February for the birds; the salt pans work in the dry months.

KhetriविरासतJhunjhunu

A copper-mining town in the Torawati hills, worked since long before the modern smelter was built there. Its ruler Ajit Singh was the patron who suggested the name Vivekananda to the monk then called Sachchidananda, and provided the turban and the fare for the 1893 journey to Chicago.

PilaniशहरीJhunjhunu

The Birla family's home town, and the clearest case of the money coming back as institutions rather than only as buildings — a school, a museum and the engineering institute that grew out of them. It is what the Shekhawati remittance economy looks like when it is spent on the twentieth century instead of on frescoes.
