ChirmiMarwari and Shekhawati

A young woman addresses the chirmi shrub — whose bright red seed is the image the song turns on — while waiting for her father and brothers to come and fetch her. Almost every version is about the men of her natal family not arriving.

Sung by women, often at weddings and at a bride's departure.

Gindad and Dhamal songsShekhawati

Improvised verse sung over the nagara, ranging from Krishna's Holi to the conduct of the local thakur or the price of grain. The licence to be rude is the form's entire point and is limited to the season.

Holi, from Basant Panchami onward.

KagliyoMarwari and Shekhawati

A woman speaks to a crow, taking its call as the sign that news is coming from a husband or son who has gone away to trade. In a region whose men left for Calcutta and Bombay for decades at a time, this is a documentary song, not a sentimental one.

Sung by women.

Banna and banniDhundhari

Paired praise songs for the bridegroom and the bride, traded between the two families' women and frequently turning into open mockery of the other side.

Weddings.

RatijagaDhundhari

A sequence invoking each of the family's deities in turn, in an order specific to the lineage. It is one of the few places a household's own religious history is transmitted intact.

The night vigil before a wedding or after a birth.

Khatu Shyam bhajansHindi and Dhundhari

Devotion to Barbarik as Shyam, built around the epithet of the one who supports the defeated. Composed and recorded continuously since the late twentieth century, and the most commercially significant devotional repertoire in the region.

Walking pilgrimage to Khatushyamji, and the Phalgun fair.

Teej and Sawan songsDhundhari

Swings, leheriya, rain and a woman's return to her mother's house for the season — sung in courtyards and now also along the route of Jaipur's Teej procession.

The monsoon month.
