Shekhawati Remittance Corridor
Money and marriage, both running in one direction and back. Merchant families from the Shekhawati towns settled in Calcutta, Bombay and the Assam tea districts from about 1830, and sent profits home to build havelis, chhatris, wells, temples and schools, while continuing to marry within the home network.
The Calcutta branch built its houses in Shekhawati and lived in Burrabazar; the later Bombay generation built in Bombay and stopped coming back. That difference is legible in the towns — the fresco building programme stops almost completely in the 1930s.
Ahirwati–Torawati Corridor
Speech and drainage together. Shekhawati and Torawati shade into the Ahirwati of Narnaul, Mahendragarh and Rewari with no break, and the Sahibi river rises in the Torawati hills and ends in the Najafgarh drainage at Delhi. Holi chang singing and the Kachhi Ghodi dance carry across the same line.
The Haryana side developed a dairy and wrestling culture the Rajasthan side does not have; the Rajasthan side kept the fresco and merchant tradition the Haryana side does not.
Chhipa Block-Print Corridor
One printing family and one process — harda pre-treatment, carved wooden blocks, mud or gum resist, indigo and madder, iron-and-jaggery black — running from Sanganer and Bagru through Akola on the Mewar side to Bagh in Madhya Pradesh and the ajrakh centres of Kutch.
Bagru resists with clay from a tank bed; Bagh's colours depend on the mineral content of a particular river; Kutch's ajrakh is printed on both faces in register, which neither of the Rajasthan centres attempts.
Khatu–Salasar Pilgrim Corridor
Walking pilgrimage. Foot parties carrying banners move from Delhi, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh to Khatushyamji and Salasar along established routes, supported by free kitchens run by traders along the way, and carrying a recorded bhajan repertoire with them.
In Rajasthan the shrines are embedded in an older Shakta and Hanuman landscape; on the Delhi and Haryana side the same devotion is an urban trader's practice with almost no local shrine attached.
Caravan and Salt Corridor
The overland routes that made this belt rich before the railways — Gujarat's ports to Delhi and the Punjab across Shekhawati, carrying opium, cotton, salt from Sambhar and specie, handled by Banjara carriers and financed by the local firms.
Once the railways reached the ports directly, the caravan trade collapsed and the merchant families followed the traffic east to Calcutta rather than trying to hold the route. Sambhar's salt survived because salt was taxed and monopolised rather than because the road did.
