On the final morning several thousand musicians sing the five Pancharatna kritis in unison, in sequence, from memory — the largest unrehearsed ensemble performance in Indian classical music. Women were excluded from the singing until the 1940s, when Bangalore Nagarathnamma, who had built the samadhi shrine at her own expense, forced the issue. |
| Mahamaham, Kumbakonam | Once in twelve years, in Masi (February–March) | Held when Jupiter is in Leo and the full moon falls in the Magha asterism, which aligns roughly once every twelve years. Pilgrims bathe in the tank, and processional images from a dozen temples are brought to its steps. The last was on 22 February 2016; the next falls in 2028. |
