Chola Nadu · Eastern Coastal Plains

Chola Maritime Corridor

Tamil NaduPuducherrySri LankaIDMYSGTH

Tamil merchant-guild inscriptions, Shaiva and Buddhist temple foundations, and a shipbuilding and navigation vocabulary. The Srivijayan king Sri Maravijayottungavarman built a monastery at Nagapattinam around 1006 with Rajaraja I's endowment; Rajendra I's fleet raided Srivijaya in 1025; and the Ainnurruvar merchant guild left inscriptions in Sumatra and on the Thai isthmus.

On the Southeast Asian side the Tamil presence survives as inscriptions, place names and Hindu-Buddhist iconography absorbed into later local traditions; here it survives as copper-plate grants and a coastline of port towns that lost their trade to Nagapattinam's silting and to European companies.

Nagore Dargah Corridor

Tamil NaduMYSG

The cult of Shahul Hamid of Nagore, carried by Tamil Muslim traders to the Straits. Branch shrines were established at Penang and on Telok Ayer Street in Singapore in the early nineteenth century, with the same flag hoisting, sandal-paste rite and kanduri distribution.

The Singapore shrine is now a gazetted national monument housing a heritage centre rather than a functioning dargah; the Nagore original remains a working shrine with a fourteen-day urs and a substantially Hindu attendance.

Carnatic Repertoire Corridor

Tamil NaduPuducherryKarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelanganaKerala

The kriti form and the Trinity's compositions, taught by lineage and now performed identically from Thiruvaiyaru to Bengaluru, Vijayawada and the December season in Chennai. Aradhana observances modelled on Thiruvaiyaru's are now held in a dozen cities and several countries.

Andhra and Telangana claim Tyagaraja through his language and ancestry and hold their own aradhanas; Karnataka developed a distinct Mysore school around Chinnayya of the Thanjavur Quartet and its own Vaggeyakara lineage; the delta kept the samadhi and the date.

Bharatanatyam Margam Corridor

Tamil NaduKeralaKarnataka

The concert order fixed by the Thanjavur Quartet — alarippu to tillana — with its adavu syllabus and its varnams, exported by the brothers themselves when Vadivelu went to Swathi Thirunal's court at Travancore and Chinnayya to Krishnaraja Wadiyar III's at Mysore.

Travancore absorbed the quartet's music into a royal compositional tradition and into Mohiniyattam's codification; Mysore developed its own bani; the Thanjavur line stayed with the hereditary nattuvanar families and became, in the twentieth century, the mainstream taught in city schools.

Tranquebar Mission Corridor

Tamil NaduDK

A colony, a printing press and a language project. The Danish-Halle mission at Tranquebar from 1706 printed the first books in Tamil types in India, produced the first Tamil New Testament, and compiled Tamil grammars and dictionaries that European scholarship then used for two centuries.

In Denmark the episode survives as an archive and a restoration interest — Danish funding has repaired several Tranquebar buildings; here it survives as a fort, a street plan, a Lutheran congregation and a printing history that Tamil publishing still dates itself from.

Cauvery Delta Water Corridor

KarnatakaTamil NaduPuducherryKerala

One river and the crop calendar it dictates. The delta's short kuruvai crop can only be sown if water is released from Mettur at the customary date in June, which depends in turn on storage upstream and on the allocation set by tribunal.

Upstream the Cauvery irrigates a plateau with different soils, a different rainfall regime and a different cropping pattern; downstream it feeds a delta with no alternative source and a second and third crop riding on the release. The same water is a supplement in one place and the whole economy in the other.
