Chenab Valley & Chamba · Western Himalaya & Trans-Himalaya

भूभाग और पारिस्थितिक अंचल

Temperate to alpine, and controlled almost entirely by altitude and aspect. Chamba town at 1,000 m is warm enough for maize and rice; Bharmour at 2,200 m is not; Pangi at 2,400 m and above gets six to seven months of snow and its passes close from about November to June. The Dhauladhar catches the monsoon and the Pir Panjal blocks it, so the outer valleys are wet and the inner ones — Pangi in particular — are semi-arid and depend on snowmelt channels rather than on rain.

साल भर

मौसममहीनेसामान्यकैसा रहता है
WinterNovember–March-10 to 12 °CPangi and Bharmour are snowbound and the high passes shut. Households live off what was dried and stored in autumn, and the smoke loft above the hearth is doing most of the food preservation.
SpringApril–May5–22 °CSnowmelt, the first Gaddi flocks starting up from the Kangra and lower Chamba winter grazing, and morels appearing in the forest litter after the ground thaws.
SummerJune–August15–30 °CThe four months in which the passes are open, Pangi is reachable by road, and the whole calendar of fairs and yatras is compressed. The Minjar at Chamba and the Manimahesh yatra both fall in this window.
MonsoonJuly–mid-September15–26 °CHeavy on the Dhauladhar side, much lighter beyond the Pir Panjal. Landslides close the Chamba–Bharmour and Kishtwar–Killar roads repeatedly.
AutumnOctober5–20 °CThe flocks come down, the crop is dried and stored, and the clearest views of the year open on the Manimahesh and Dhauladhar walls.

घूमने का सबसे अच्छा समयMay to October for Chamba, Khajjiar and Bharmour; late June to early September if Pangi or the Sach Pass is the point, because the road simply does not exist outside that window. The Minjar falls in the second week of Shravana in late July or August, and the Manimahesh yatra on Radhashtami in late August or September.
