Chamba town and the ChauganविरासतChamba

Founded when Raja Sahil Varman moved his capital down from Bharmour in 920 CE and named for his daughter Champavati. The town sits on a terrace above the Ravi around the Chaugan, a level grass esplanade some 800 metres long consolidated from five smaller ones in 1890, which serves as fairground, market, sports field and the site of the Minjar. Chamba's ruling line ran unbroken for a thousand years, which is why its archive of copper-plate charters is the fullest in the western Himalaya.

सबसे अच्छा समय: March–June and September–November.

Lakshmi Narayan temple complexतीर्थChamba

Six stone shikhara temples in one walled courtyard, the principal one built by Sahil Varman in the tenth century, each capped with a wooden roof and slate umbrella against the snow — a Nagara temple wearing a Himalayan hat, and the standard solution in these valleys.

Bharmour and the Chaurasi complexतीर्थChamba

The old capital, Brahmapura, at 2,200 m, with eighty-four shrines around a single paved courtyard. The Lakshana Devi temple here has a carved wooden doorframe of about the seventh century and a brass image made for Raja Meru Varman, and the courtyard's Nandi and Ganesha are brass castings of the same date. Almost nothing else of that age survives anywhere in India in continuous worship.

सबसे अच्छा समय: May–October. कैसे पहुँचें: 65 km by road from Chamba, about three hours.

Chhatrariतीर्थChamba

A village between Chamba and Bharmour whose Shakti Devi temple holds a brass image cast for Meru Varman and inscribed with the name of its maker, Gugga, together with a carved wooden mandapa. Far less visited than Bharmour and of the same period.

Manimahesh Kailash and Dal lakeतीर्थChamba

A 5,653 m peak treated as a form of Shiva and, by long-standing convention, not climbed. The pilgrimage goes to the glacial lake at about 4,080 m below it, reached on foot from Hadsar over roughly thirteen kilometres, and the whole yatra is compressed into a few weeks around Radhashtami.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Late August–September, during the yatra.

Khajjiarप्रकृतिChamba

A saucer-shaped meadow at about 1,950 m ringed by deodar, with a floating island in a small lake at its centre and the twelfth-century Khajji Nag temple at its edge. It is heavily visited, and the meadow's drainage and turf have suffered for it.

सबसे अच्छा समय: April–June and September–November.

Dalhousieपहाड़Chamba

A hill station laid out from 1854 across five ridges, with churches, a colonial mall and views to the Dhauladhar. It functions as the road gateway to Chamba from Pathankot.

Kalatop–Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuaryवन्यजीवChamba

Deodar and blue-pine forest between Dalhousie and Khajjiar holding Himalayan black bear, serow, goral and a substantial bird list. Walking tracks run through it and vehicles are restricted.

Pangi and the Sach Passप्रकृतिChamba

The Chenab's Himachal stretch, reached from Chamba only over the Sach Pass at 4,420 m, which is open for roughly four months a year. Killar is the administrative centre; the Mindhal Vasuki temple stands above it. When Sach is shut, Pangi is reached from Lahaul via Udaipur, or from Kishtwar down the gorge, which means the valley's practical connections run to two other regions rather than to its own headquarters.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Late June–September.

Bhaderwahपहाड़Doda

A pine-ringed bowl at about 1,600 m on the Neeru, known locally as Chhota Kashmir. The Vasuki Nag temple is the town's principal shrine, the Kailash Kund lake above it is the destination of an annual yatra, and the Padri pass road links it directly to Chamba. It is the rajmash capital of the region.

सबसे अच्छा समय: April–October.

KishtwarविरासतKishtwar

A town on a plateau above the Chenab–Marusudar confluence at about 1,600 m, with its own large open chowgan at the centre and the shrines of Shah Farid-ud-Din and Shah Asrar-ud-Din beside it. It is the gateway to the Paddar sapphire country, to the Machail pilgrimage and, over the Sinthan pass, to the Kashmir Valley.

सबसे अच्छा समय: April–October.

Machailतीर्थKishtwar

A village high in the Paddar valley whose Chandi temple draws an annual walking yatra of tens of thousands from Gulabgarh over roughly thirty kilometres. The pilgrimage has grown from a local observance into the largest gathering in the upper Chenab in about four decades.

सबसे अच्छा समय: August.

Kishtwar High Altitude National Parkवन्यजीवKishtwar

A park of alpine meadow, glacier and birch above the Marusudar and Kibar valleys, holding markhor, ibex, musk deer and snow leopard. Access is on foot and limited.

Bhuri Singh MuseumविरासतChamba

Founded on 14 September 1908 and named for the ruling raja, largely to house the Chamba copper-plate and Sharada-script inscriptions and the fountain slabs. It holds the principal collections of Chamba rumals and Pahari painting, and it exists because a Dutch epigraphist working on the state's charters argued that they needed one.

Chamera lakeप्रकृतिChamba

The reservoir on the Ravi below Chamba, used for boating, and the clearest example of what hydroelectric development has done to the valley floor — several such projects are strung along both the Ravi and the Chenab.
