Gaddi Transhumance Corridor

Himachal PradeshJammu & Kashmir

Flocks of sheep and goats, and with them the Bharmauri language, the chola-and-dora dress, the nuala ritual and the ghee-at-the-pasture dairy method. Households winter their animals in the low Kangra and Chamba hills and the Shivalik scrub, and walk them in April and May over the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal passes — Indrahar, Kugti, Chobia, Kalicho — into Bharmour, Lahaul, Pangi and the Zanskar-facing pastures, returning in September and October. A named alpine thatch is heritable property, so the route is a legal geography as well as a physical one.

On the Himachal side the Gaddis are a Scheduled Tribe with recognised grazing rights and a settled village base at Bharmour; the same households grazing across the range hold their access under separate arrangements. Increasingly the walk is done by hired shepherds while the family stays below, and the dress survives on the migration long after it has disappeared from the village.

Pahari Miniature Painting Corridor

Jammu & KashmirHimachal PradeshPunjab

A single extended painter family and its repertoire, moving between Basohli, Nurpur, Jasrota, Guler, Chamba, Kangra and Mandi. Nainsukh's sons and nephews carried the family manner outward, and Nikka settled at Chamba, which is how the Guler style arrives here and then passes out of paper altogether into the drawn outlines of the Chamba rumal.

Basohli, at the lowest altitude and the earliest date, is hot, flat and red with beetle-wing inlay; Guler and Kangra are pale, modelled and naturalistic; Chamba absorbed the Guler manner, applied it to local subjects and then converted it into embroidery — the only place in the corridor where the painting tradition changed medium and survived in the new one.

Dogri–Punjabi–Pahari Speech Continuum

Jammu & KashmirHimachal PradeshPunjab

An unbroken chain of Indo-Aryan speech from the Punjab plain up through Dogri and across the Ravi into Bhattiyali, Chambeali, Churahi, Bharmauri and Pangwali, with Bhaderwahi, Bhalesi and Sirazi continuing it up the Chenab. Adjacent villages are mutually intelligible the whole way.

Only Dogri has a standardised form and Eighth Schedule status. Everything else in the chain is returned as Hindi in the census and taught in neither script it was historically written in — Takri on the Chamba side, Dogra Akkhar below. And the chain has one clean break in it: Kishtwari, spoken at the top of the Chenab, is a Dardic relative of Kashmiri and not part of the Pahari continuum at all.

The Chenab Gorge Corridor

Himachal PradeshJammu & Kashmir

Movement along the river itself — the single-lane Killar–Kishtwar road cut into the gorge wall, the Padri pass road linking Bhaderwah to Chamba, the trade in rajmash, dried morels, walnut and wool, and the shared Nag and Kailash devotional geography that puts Manimahesh above Bharmour and Kailash Kund above Bhaderwah in the same religious frame.

The Chamba side kept a continuous dynasty, a written archive and a stone and wood temple tradition; the upper Chenab side has a Persianate and Sufi layer at Kishtwar and a devotional life organised around serpent deities and high-lake pilgrimages. The two halves share a language chain, a bean and a pastoral economy, and almost no institutional history.

The Dham and Madra Corridor

Himachal PradeshJammu & Kashmir

The leaf-plate ceremonial meal and its fixed sequence — madra of curd-braised pulses, a sour khatta, dal and sweet rice, cooked without onion or garlic and served to seated rows. It runs from the Jammu hills across the Ravi through Chamba and Kangra into Mandi and Kullu.

In Himachal the meal is the work of the Botis, a hereditary cook community, cooking in brass charotis for several hundred people at a time, and the khatta is the sharper course; on the Duggar side the same meal is cooked by the household or by hired Brahmin cooks and the sweet-sour ambal is more prominent. The technique is identical and the social organisation around it is not.

The Gucchi and Hill-Produce Trade

Jammu & KashmirHimachal PradeshPunjab

Wild morels, dried wild pomegranate seed, walnut, honey and rajmash gathered or grown in the Chenab and Ravi valleys and moving down through a small number of wholesalers at Jammu, Pathankot and Delhi. Three of these products — Bhaderwah Rajmash, Ramban Sulai honey and Kashmir saffron — now carry geographical indications; the morels, which are the most valuable of all, carry nothing, because nobody can define where a wild mushroom was picked.

Where a product is farmed, the registration has begun to return value to the grower; where it is gathered from forest by households with no land, almost none of the retail price comes back.
