Tropical monsoon, and among the wettest parts of peninsular India on the ghat crest. The coast takes roughly 3,000–4,000 mm and the crest above Siddapur and Yellapur can take more, almost all of it between June and September. Temperatures stay between 20 °C and 34 °C year round, so the year is divided by water rather than by heat, and the four monsoon months effectively close the ghat tracks and the fishing season together.

MonsoonJune–September22–30 °CRain that does not stop. The mechanised fishing ban runs through it, the estuaries run fresh, the falls are at full volume and largely inaccessible, and the areca gardens are at their most vulnerable to koleroga, the fruit rot that determines the year's income.
Post-monsoonOctober–November23–32 °CAreca harvest begins. Nuts are plucked, boiled, dried on courtyards and graded, and the whole upland smells of it. The falls are still strong and the roads are open.
WinterDecember–February20–33 °CThe clear season — pilgrimage, jatra, Yakshagana all-night performances in the fields after harvest, and the easiest walking in the ghats.
SummerMarch–May25–35 °CAppemidi season on the riverbanks, when the wild mango sets tender fruit and pickling households go out to named trees. Hot, humid and still on the coast.
