Mayurasharma	Fourth century	Founder of the Kadamba dynasty	Established rule at Banavasi and founded the first dynasty to govern from within the Kannada country rather than as a provincial arm of a power based elsewhere. The Kadamba record is the earliest point at which this region appears as a political centre in its own right.
Pampa	c. 902–975	Poet	The Adikavi of Kannada. He served a Chalukya feudatory court far to the north-east, but his verse about longing for the Banavasi country — that even goaded, his mind would still remember it — is the most quoted line in Kannada about any place, and it is about this region.
Chennabhairadevi	Ruled through the second half of the sixteenth century	Ruler of Gersoppa	Held this coast and its pepper trade for more than fifty years against Portuguese, Bijapuri and Vijayanagara pressure, and was known to the Portuguese as the Pepper Queen because the pepper they bought passed through her ports at Honnavar and Bhatkal.
Vadiraja Tirtha	Sixteenth century	Madhva teacher and Kannada poet	Seer of the Sode mutt at Sonda, author of Sanskrit and Kannada devotional works, and the figure around whom the region's Madhva institutional life is organised. His brindavana at Sonda remains a pilgrimage centre.
Channabasavanna	Twelfth century	Sharana and religious reformer	Nephew of Basavanna and one of the Sharanas who left Kalyana after the upheaval that followed the movement's challenge to caste order. His samadhi at Ulavi, deep in the Kali forest, is the reason a Lingayat pilgrimage runs into a corner of this district that has almost no other connection to northern Karnataka.
Sukri Bommagowda	—	Halakki folk singer	Carried a very large oral repertoire of Halakki Vokkaliga songs into recording and broadcast, and campaigned on her community's land and forest rights. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017, and is known widely as the Halakki Kogile.
Keremane Shivarama Hegde	—	Yakshagana performer and troupe founder	Founded the Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali, the best known of the Badagutittu troupes, and moved the northern style from a purely village institution towards a documented, touring and professionally organised one. The Keremane family has led the troupe across generations.
Chittani Ramachandra Hegde	—	Yakshagana performer	A Badagutittu artist of exceptional range, awarded the Padma Shri, and one of the performers by whom the northern style's standards of dance and improvised dialogue are still measured.
Girish Karnad	1938–2019	Playwright, actor and film-maker	Grew up in Sirsi, and repeatedly said that the Yakshagana and company-theatre nights he watched there shaped his sense of what a play could do. Wrote Tughlaq, Hayavadana and Nagamandala, and was awarded the Jnanpith in 1998.
Jayant Kaikini	b. 1955	Writer and lyricist	From Gokarna; writes Kannada short fiction rooted in small-town and coastal life, and has written several hundred film lyrics. His father Gourish Kaikini was a writer and journalist of the same town.
R. N. Shetty	—	Industrialist and temple patron	Built the modern Murudeshwar complex — the Shiva statue, the twenty-storey gopura and the surrounding development — funding a pilgrimage site into national visibility from a base in this coast's own construction and hospitality economy.
Shantaram Budna Siddi	—	Public representative	Nominated to the Karnataka Legislative Council in 2020, the first member of the Siddi community to sit in it, after decades of the community's campaigning on land, forest rights and Scheduled Tribe recognition.
