त्योहार
| त्योहार | कब | क्या होता है |
|---|---|---|
| Sirsi Marikamba jatre | February–March, in odd-numbered years only | Nine days of chariot procession, fair and night performance, drawing several lakh people to a town of well under a lakh. It is the largest jatre in Karnataka, is held biennially rather than annually, and the entire upland economy plans around it. |
| Mahashivaratri at Gokarna | Phalguna, February–March | The Mahabaleshwara temple's car festival, when the chariot is drawn through the main street by pilgrims. The town is at its fullest, and the ritual bathing at Kotitirtha runs through the night. |
| The Yakshagana season | Roughly November to May | Not a single festival but the calendar that organises the region's nights. Once the fields are harvested, troupes tour village to village and perform from about ten at night until dawn, on ground lent by a temple or a household. The monsoon closes the season and talamaddale takes its place indoors. |
| Suggi and Holi | Phalguna, March | The Halakki Vokkaliga harvest season, with feathered headdress processions moving house to house over several days, drums, collection and performance. It is the community's most visible public occasion of the year. |
| Ganesh Chaturthi | Bhadrapada, August–September | The principal household festival above the ghat and the busiest day of the year at Idagunji. Households make kadubu and holige, and village associations run the immersion processions with chende ensembles. |
| Kadambotsava | December | A cultural festival held at Banavasi, staging Kannada literature, music and Yakshagana at the old Kadamba capital. It is a modern institution built deliberately on the town's antiquity. |
| Nagara Panchami and serpent worship | Shravana, July–August | Naga stones in grove and garden are washed with milk and turmeric across the areca uplands, and households perform ashlesha bali at the family shrine. Serpent worship is unusually strong here, and the sacred groves that hold the stones are the oldest protected patches of forest in the region. |
| Losar at Mundgod | February–March | Tibetan New Year at Doeguling, with monastic debate, masked cham dancing at the monasteries and household observances in the settlement's camps. |
| The opening of the fishing season | Early August, when the monsoon ban lifts | Boats are cleaned, painted and blessed at the Karwar, Ankola, Kumta and Honnavar landings before the fleet goes out. The ban is a fisheries regulation rather than a festival, but the day it ends is treated as one. |
| Ulavi jatre | Annual, in the dry months | Lingayat pilgrims walk into the Joida forest to Channabasavanna's samadhi, many of them on foot from far outside the district, and the village holds a fair for the duration. |
| Deepotsava and Karthika | Kartika, November–December | Lamp festivals at Gokarna, Idagunji, Murudeshwar and the upland temples, and the month in which the coastal shrines are at their most photographed and least crowded. |
