Konkani Coastal Corridor
Konkani speech, the coconut-and-kokum fish curry, sanna, solkadhi and the Saraswat temple network, continuous from the Kali estuary north through Goa into Sindhudurg.
Goan Konkani is written officially in Devanagari and on stage in Roman; here it is written in Devanagari or Kannada script depending on community, and the surrounding administrative and school language is Kannada, so Konkani here is a household language rather than a public one.
Yakshagana Corridor
All-night dance-drama on epic and puranic prasangas, with the bhagavata directing from a fixed position, from Uttara Kannada down the Karnataka coast into Kasaragod.
Badagutittu in the north and Tenkutittu in the south split at roughly the Sitanadi and differ in headgear, drumming and the proportion of dance to dialogue. Kasaragod's troupes work at the Malayalam-speaking edge and perform for audiences who follow the Kannada verse but not always the spoken improvisation.
Areca and Spice Ghat Corridor
The multi-storey areca and pepper garden, its koleroga management, the boiling-and-grading craft and the cooperative marketing system, from Uttara Kannada across the Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru Malnad and into the Goan ghat taluks.
Karnataka's uplands built large grower cooperatives that hold appellations and set grades; the Goan side kept areca as a smallholder crop without a comparable marketing structure. The cultivation is the same; the institution around it is not.
Saraswat and Temple Migration Corridor
Konkani-speaking Saraswat households and their deities moving south from the sixteenth century, and with them the coconut-and-kokum kitchen, sanna, temple institutions and a merchant and professional role in the towns they settled in.
In Goa the moved deities kept the names of the villages they left. Here and further south the same households became urban traders and professionals, worship in Kannada- and Malayalam-speaking surroundings, and lost the teppal from the fish curry along the way.
Garcinia Souring Corridor
Souring by Garcinia rind rather than by tamarind or lime — kokum in the north, uppage alongside it here, and kudampuli by the time the coast reaches Kerala.
Malvan and Goa use kokum for the pink solkadhi and the fish curry; this coast uses uppage for a darker, more astringent result and switches between the two by dish; Kerala's kudampuli is smoked over a fire before drying, which the northern coast never does.
Siddi Settlement Corridor
Communities of East African descent settled along the western coast and its interiors since the sixteenth century — the Siddis of the Uttara Kannada forests, of Goa and Maharashtra, and the Sidis of Gujarat around Junagadh and the Gir.
The Gujarat community maintains the Baba Gor shrine tradition and the Sidi Goma drum performance as a public devotional form; the Karnataka community's traditions are more domestic — the kawandi quilt, the Damaami drumming — and its recent history is dominated by forest rights and Scheduled Tribe recognition rather than by a shrine.
Nawayath Trade Corridor
The Arab-contact merchant coast — Bhatkal's Nawayath community, the Mappila and Beary trading towns to the south, and the Konkani Muslim settlements to the north, linked historically by pepper and horses and now by Gulf employment and remittance.
Bhatkal built its mosques in the local temple idiom, in stone with sloping tiled roofs; Malabar did the same in timber. The language differs at every stop — Nawayathi here, Beary further south, Arabi-Malayalam in Malabar — but each is a trade language written or spoken by the same kind of community.
