Kajli Mela, MahobaThe day after Raksha Bandhan, Savan (August)A three-day fair with a procession of kajli — barley shoots grown in baskets — taken to Kirat Sagar and immersed. It is understood locally as a commemoration of a Chandela battle, and it is the largest gathering in the tank belt.
Alha singing seasonSavan and Bhadon (July–September)Not a festival with a date, but a season: Alhaits sing at village gatherings through the monsoon, often competitively, and the same episodes are demanded year after year.
Diwari and MauniyaThe days around Diwali (October–November)Ahir stick-dance troupes move between villages, and the mauniya dancers hold a day-long vow of silence while dancing. Cattle are washed, painted and garlanded, and in some villages driven over prostrate devotees.
Holi and the Fag gatheringsPhalgun (February–March)Fag verses sung from Basant Panchami onwards, building to Holi. Isuri's verses are sung by name, and villages hold overnight singing sittings in the weeks before.
Khajuraho Dance FestivalFebruaryA week of classical dance staged against the western group of temples, run by the Madhya Pradesh government since the mid-1970s. It is the region's one internationally visible cultural event.
Ram Navami and Vivah Panchami at OrchhaChaitra (March–April); Margashirsha (November–December)Rama's birth and his marriage observed at the Ram Raja temple with the protocols of a royal court rather than a temple — processions, salutes and state honours.
Somvati Amavasya at ChitrakootAny new moon falling on a MondayLakhs of pilgrims walk the Kamadgiri parikrama and bathe in the Mandakini. Amavasya crowds are large every month; a Monday amavasya multiplies them.
Sharad Purnima at Padmavati Puri Dham, PannaAshwin Purnima (October)The principal observance of the Pranami sampraday, founded by Mahamati Prannath, whose seat is at Panna and whose most famous disciple and patron was Chhatrasal.
Nag PanchamiSavan (July–August)Wrestling bouts at village akharas, and the start of the heaviest Alha singing. In parts of the region it is also when the year's first Diwari practice begins.
