Braj · Upper Indus–Gangetic Plain
Braj Bhasha is the reason this region matters to anyone who has never been to it. From roughly the fifteenth to the nineteenth century it, and not Khari Boli, was the literary language of northern India: Surdas, Bihari, Keshavdas, Ghananand, Padmakar and Raskhan all wrote in it, much of the Dasam Granth is in it, and Hindi poetry only switched to the Delhi-region standard around 1900. Today its speakers are counted as Hindi speakers and the language survives mainly in song, ritual and rural speech.

स्थानीय शब्दावली
| शब्द | अर्थ |
|---|---|
| Lila लीला | Divine play — an episode of the story treated as something that happened in a particular place and, in performance, as something happening again. |
| Parikrama परिक्रमा | Circumambulation of a sacred object at any scale — a tree, a hill, or the whole region. The Braj Chaurasi Kos parikrama is roughly 250 km and takes weeks. |
| Kunj कुंज | A grove or bower. Named kunjs are pilgrimage sites; Seva Kunj and Nidhivan are the best known. |
| Kund कुंड | A stepped tank. Radha Kund and Shyam Kund are the two most sacred in Vaishnav practice and are bathed in at midnight on Ahoi Ashtami. |
| Bhog भोग | Food offered to the deity, and the timetable of offerings through the day — mangla, shringar, gwal, rajbhog, utthapan, bhog, sandhya and shayan in the Pushtimarg havelis. |
| Prasad प्रसाद | What the offering becomes once it has been accepted, and therefore the only category of food most pilgrims will eat in the region. |
| Braj-vasi ब्रजवासी | A resident of Braj, used as a claim of standing rather than an address — the term carries a devotional status that outsiders cannot acquire by moving in. |
| Chaurasi kos चौरासी कोस | The eighty-four-kos circuit that defines Braj's extent, walked as a single continuous pilgrimage and crossing four states as it goes. |
| Rasiya रसिया | Both the song genre and, in the songs themselves, the lover being addressed. |
| Nikunj निकुंज | The inner grove of Vrindavan in Haridasi and Radhavallabhi theology, where the divine couple is understood to be eternally present — which is why Nidhivan is closed to everyone after dark. |
कहावतें
| कहावत | शाब्दिक अर्थ | अर्थ |
|---|---|---|
| Braj mein Hori, aur des mein Diwali | Holi in Braj, Diwali elsewhere | Every region has its one festival that matters more than the rest; here it is Holi, by a wide margin. |
| Jo Braj mein rahe, so Braj ko ho jaaye | Whoever lives in Braj becomes of Braj | Used of the many outsiders — Bengali, Gujarati, South Indian, foreign — who settled in Vrindavan and stayed. |
| Radhe Radhe | Radha, Radha | The regional greeting, used exactly as namaste is elsewhere — between strangers, on the phone and in shops. Note that the name invoked is hers, not his. |
| Bina Radha nahin Shyam | Without Radha there is no Krishna | Theology as everyday speech; in Braj practice Radha is the senior partner, which is not true of Vaishnavism generally. |
