जगहें

Hazarduari PalaceविरासतMurshidabad

A Greek-revival palace on the Bhagirathi, built between 1829 and 1837 to a design by Duncan Macleod of the Bengal Engineers for Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah. The name means a thousand doors, and a large number of them are false doors set into the walls. It is now a museum holding the Nizamat's arms, paintings and library.

सबसे अच्छा समय: November–February.

Katra MasjidविरासतMurshidabad

Murshid Quli Khan's congregational mosque and caravanserai of the early 1720s, with corner towers and a raised platform. He is buried under the entrance steps, by his own instruction, so that those entering to pray would pass over his grave.

KhoshbaghविरासतMurshidabad

A walled garden cemetery on the far bank of the Bhagirathi holding the graves of Alivardi Khan, Siraj-ud-Daulah and their household. Reached by boat, and deliberately plain — the contrast with Hazarduari across the water is the point of visiting both.

Nizamat Imambara and MotijhilविरासतMurshidabad

The 1847 imambara facing the palace across the Nizamat compound, and the oxbow lake at Motijhil that was the seat of the Nawabs' earlier establishment. Motijhil is a dead channel of the Bhagirathi, which is why an eighteenth- century power centre now sits beside a pond.

Baranagar terracotta templesविरासतMurshidabad

The Char Bangla group and the Bhavaninath temple, built in the mid-eighteenth century under Rani Bhabani. Small, intensely carved brick temples on a riverbank with almost no visitors, and among the best terracotta panels in the delta.

Nabadwipतीर्थNadia

Chaitanya's birthplace, born here in 1486, and the town where public congregational sankirtan began. It was also a centre of Navya-Nyaya logic with its own scholastic tradition. The Bhagirathi has shifted repeatedly and the town has moved with it, so the medieval site and the present town are not in the same place.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Ras Purnima in November; Gaura Purnima in March.

Mayapurतीर्थNadia

Across the river from Nabadwip, identified in the late nineteenth century as Chaitanya's exact birth site and since developed as the international headquarters of ISKCON. It draws a very large foreign resident and pilgrim population, which makes it unlike any other pilgrimage town in the delta.

SantipurविरासतNadia

A weaving town and a Vaishnava centre at once — the seat of Advaita Acharya, Chaitanya's senior contemporary, and the source of the finest cotton saris in the delta. Its Ras festival runs on a scale that shuts the town.

Kalna temple complexविरासतPurba Bardhaman

Ambika Kalna's Nabakailash — one hundred and eight small Shiva temples set in two concentric rings, built in 1809 — and the Pratapeswar temple of 1849, whose terracotta panels are the densest surviving narrative brickwork in the region. Built by the Bardhaman raj family on the Bhagirathi bank.

सबसे अच्छा समय: October–February.

ChandernagoreविरासतHooghly

A French settlement from 1673 that remained French until a 1949 referendum and was transferred to India in 1950, formally merging in 1954. The Strand, the Sacred Heart Church, the Dupleix residence now serving as a museum, and a street plan with French names survive. Its Jagaddhatri Puja lighting workshops supply illuminations to festivals across the country.

ChinsurahविरासतHooghly

The Dutch station from the mid-seventeenth century, ceded to Britain under the Anglo-Dutch treaty of 1824. The Dutch cemetery with its brick tombs, the old Fort Gustavus site and the Armenian church nearby are what remain.

Bandel BasilicaविरासतHooghly

The Basilica of the Holy Rosary, founded by Portuguese Augustinians in 1599, sacked in 1632 and rebuilt in 1660; the original 1599 gateway still stands. A ship's mast hangs in the grounds, left as a votive offering by a captain who survived a storm — the most literal object in the delta's European inventory.

SeramporeविरासतHooghly

Danish Frederiknagore from 1755 until it was sold to Britain in 1845. St Olav's Church, the Danish Tavern and Serampore College — founded in 1818 and empowered to grant degrees by a Danish royal charter — are the fourth European layer on this stretch of river, after the Portuguese, Dutch and French. William Carey's press here printed the Bible into dozens of Indian languages and produced the first Bengali newspapers.

KumartuliशहरीKolkata

A few lanes of workshops in north Kolkata where the year's idols are built. Best visited between August and the first week of Durga Puja, when the frames, the clay coats and the finished images are all visible at once in different workshops on the same street.

सबसे अच्छा समय: August–September.

Dakshineswar Kali Templeतीर्थNorth 24 Parganas

Built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a woman of a trading caste who built it after the priesthood objected to her endowing a temple at all. Ramakrishna served as its priest for decades, which is what made it a national site rather than a local one.

Belur Mathतीर्थHowrah

The Ramakrishna Mission headquarters on the west bank, founded by Vivekananda in 1898. Its main temple, completed in 1938, was designed so that its elevation reads as a temple, a mosque and a church from different angles — an architectural argument, made in stone, about the Mission's position.

Hooghly ImambaraविरासतHooghly

An 1861 imambara built from Haji Mohammad Mohsin's endowment, with a clock tower whose mechanism is still wound by hand and a two-storey courtyard of Quranic calligraphy. Directly across the river from the Dutch cemetery.

ChandraketugarhविरासतNorth 24 Parganas

An excavated mound at Berachampa with occupation from around the third century BCE, producing terracotta plaques of a technical standard the delta did not match again for a thousand years. It sat on a channel that no longer exists, which is why a major ancient site is now in the middle of paddy fields.

Sagar Island and Kapil Muni templeतीर्थSouth 24 Parganas

The island at the Hooghly's mouth where the river meets the sea, and the site of the Gangasagar Mela at Makar Sankranti. The temple has had to be rebuilt more than once because the sea took the earlier ones.

सबसे अच्छा समय: Mid-January. कैसे पहुँचें: Rail to Kakdwip, vessel across Muriganga to Kachuberia, then road.
