Chalukya–Pallava Architectural Corridor
The southern Dravida temple idiom, carried both ways by war and by masons — Vikramaditya II's campaigns against Kanchi in the eighth century, and the Virupaksha at Pattadakal built afterwards in a form that directly answers the Kailasanatha at Kanchi, with named architects recorded in its inscriptions.
The Dravida line went south and matured into the Chola and later temple cities, with the tower growing and the enclosure multiplying. On this plain the same idiom stopped, and the northern Nagara experiments built beside it were never taken up at scale anywhere. Pattadakal is the record of a choice that was made somewhere else.
Ilkal and Kasuti Textile Corridor
The Ilkal saree, the Guledgudda khana blouse cut to go with it, and the kasuti stitch worked on both — three registered geographical indications inside eighty kilometres, worn as a single outfit across the whole of northern Karnataka.
The garment is woven in two towns of this plain and worn far beyond it, most heavily on the dry plateau to the east, where it is the everyday drape and where nothing comparable is woven. The weaving economy and the wearing economy sit in different regions, which is why the plateau buys its most characteristic garment.
Kirana Gayaki Corridor
A vocal method — slow, note-centred, unhurried raga exposition — taught from a town in the upper Doab through Sawai Gandharva at Kundgol to a generation of Kannada-speaking singers, and then out onto the concert stages of Pune and Bombay.
The plain produced the singers; the Marathi-speaking cities produced the festivals, the recording contracts and the audiences that employed them. The Sawai Gandharva festival that carries the teacher's name is held in Pune, not in the district where he taught.
Basava Corridor
A single biography split across two regions — birth at Basavana Bagewadi and samadhi at Kudalasangama on this plain, the Anubhava Mantapa and the movement itself at Kalyana on the plateau — together with the vachana manuscripts, which were carried out after 1167 and were edited into print here from the 1920s.
The plateau holds the events and the plain holds the archive. The recovery and publication of the corpus was done from Vijayapura and Dharwad, which is why the standard editions carry the names of scholars from this region and why the region's claim on the tradition is scholarly rather than territorial.
Soft Rotti and Chutney Pudi Corridor
Jowar bread patted out on a wet cloth, stuffed brinjal cooked in its own masala oil, sprouted-legume palya, jhunka, and a dry pounded seed powder standing in for a gravy.
Here the rotti is eaten soft the same day and the powder leans on groundnut; on the plateau to the east it is dried hard to keep for weeks and the masala leans on sesame; over the northern boundary the same bread is bhakri and the powder is thecha or shengdana chutney, wetter and hotter. One plate, three shelf lives.
Kannada–Marathi Bilingual Belt
Two languages running in the same households and streets along the western and northern edge of this region — Marathi schooling and Kannada administration in the same town, Lavani and Doddata worked by overlapping troupes, the nine-yard drape under two names, and dindi walking parties leaving for Pandharpur from villages where the announcement is made in both languages.
Theatre is the clearest divide — Tamasha to the north keeps a fixed troupe structure and a female lead; Doddata here is an all-night mythological with sung dialogue and no continuous professional company. Most performers in the belt can work either, and many do.
