The Eastern Hindi Corridor

Madhya PradeshUttar PradeshChhattisgarh

Bagheli itself, and with it the Eastern Hindi verb system — the ahai copula, the shape of the future and the past — running north into Awadhi across the Kaimur scarp and south into Chhattisgarhi along the Son. Sohar and wedding-song formulas travel the same route.

Awadhi acquired a court, a Persianate register and a canonical literature; Chhattisgarhi acquired a state and official recognition; Bagheli acquired neither, and is returned in the census as a dialect of Awadhi. Three outcomes for one branch of Indo-Aryan.

Maihar Gharana Corridor

Madhya PradeshWest BengalMaharashtraDelhi

A teaching method — instrument-agnostic technique, long systematic practice, and a repertoire built on the Senia inheritance from Wazir Khan of Rampur — carried out of Maihar by Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar, Annapurna Devi, Nikhil Banerjee and Pannalal Ghosh to Calcutta, Bombay, Delhi and eventually to conservatories in the United States and Europe.

In Calcutta and Bombay the method met the recording industry and the concert stage and produced a public performance style; at Maihar itself it remained a teaching practice in a small town. The gharana's global reach and its home town's obscurity are the same story.

Mahua, Kodo and Karma Corridor

Madhya PradeshChhattisgarhJharkhandOdishaUttar Pradesh

The central Indian forest foodway and its calendar — mahua drying and distilling, kodo and kutki husked in the okhli, tendu and chironji collection, and the Karma festival with its karam branch, mandar drum and all-night line dance.

In Bagelkhand these sit alongside a plateau cultivating economy and are marked as forest and Adivasi practices; in Bastar and Chota Nagpur they are the mainstream and carry no such marking. The same mahua tree is a supplement in one place and a foundation in the other.

Bundeli–Bagheli Contact Zone

Madhya PradeshUttar Pradesh

Concrete, countable things — the Rai dance and its Bedni performers, Baredi and Diwari at Diwali, the faag verse form, buttermilk-cooked mahera, rikwanch, the bareja betel enclosure, and the Alha cycle, whose Banaphar heroes are claimed as first devotees at Maihar's own temple.

Every one of these thins eastward and stops before the Son. What does not cross at all is grammar: the Bundeli copula stops where the Bagheli one begins, and no amount of shared dance or shared food moves that line.

Kaimur and Son Route Corridor

Madhya PradeshUttar PradeshBiharJharkhand

The old overland route along the Son and beneath the Kaimur scarp between the middle Ganga plain and the Deccan — the reason Mauryan and Shunga Buddhist sites appear on this plateau at Deur Kothar and Bharhut, far from any monastic centre, and the reason the region's early sculpture is stylistically closer to Sanchi and Bharhut than to anything in Bundelkhand.

The Gangetic end of the route kept its monastic institutions and its later temple architecture; the plateau stretch kept the stupas and lost the institutions, so the sites survive as archaeology rather than as religious practice.

Vindhyan Fort and Sandstone Corridor

Madhya PradeshUttar Pradesh

Hill forts on sandstone outcrops with rock-cut tanks and cave shrines inside the walls, running west from Bandhavgarh through Kalinjar to the Bundelkhand scarp, and the sandstone carving tradition that goes with them.

Bundelkhand's forts were capitals, sited for control of routes and tanks; Bagelkhand's, Bandhavgarh above all, sit deep inside forest and worked as refuges. Kalinjar is the hinge — Chandela-built, but held by a Baghela when Sher Shah Suri was mortally wounded beneath it in 1545.
