Karmaजनजातीय
A branch of the karam tree is cut, planted in the dancing ground and worshipped, and men and women dance around it in linked lines through the night, moving in and out with a step that shifts on a drum cue. The mandar drum leads. It is the central festival dance of the whole central Indian Adivasi belt and Bagelkhand sits inside its range rather than at its edge.
कौन करता है: Gond, Kol, Baiga and Oraon communities. मौका: Karma Puja, in Bhadon, and through the monsoon
Sailaलोक
A stick dance in which each dancer strikes the stick of the man ahead of him while the ring rotates, so the rhythm is produced by the dance itself rather than only by the drum. Danced in Bagelkhand, Chhattisgarh and the Mahakoshal forests.
कौन करता है: Young men, in a ring. मौका: Post-harvest, from Diwali to Holi
Raiलोक
The Bundelkhandi spinning dance, present across Satna and western Rewa where the Bundeli cultural reach extends. It is a borrowed form here rather than a native one, and it stops well short of the Son valley.
कौन करता है: Bedni women. मौका: Weddings and fairs, western districts
Kol dancesजनजातीय
Line and circle dances with dhol and timki, performed by men and women together, with sung couplets exchanged between the two lines. The Kol are one of the largest Scheduled Tribe populations of the region and their forms are much less documented than Gond ones.
कौन करता है: Kol communities of Rewa, Satna and Sidhi. मौका: Weddings, harvest and community gatherings
Baredi and Diwariलोक
A stick-and-leap dance with sung couplets, carried in from Bundelkhand and strongest around Satna.
कौन करता है: Ahir and Yadav men, western districts. मौका: Diwali
संगीत
The Maihar gharana
Founded at Maihar by Ustad Allauddin Khan (1881–1972), who came from Shibpur in eastern Bengal, trained under Wazir Khan of Rampur in the Senia tradition, and settled as court musician to the Maharaja of Maihar. The gharana's method — a systematic, exacting, instrument-agnostic pedagogy applied to sarod, sitar, surbahar and flute alike — is what makes it a school rather than a family style, and it produced Ali Akbar Khan, Annapurna Devi, Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Banerjee and Pannalal Ghosh. Its influence on twentieth-century instrumental Hindustani music is difficult to overstate, and it started in a small Vindhyan temple town of no musical standing whatever.
The Maihar Band
An orchestra of orphaned children assembled by Allauddin Khan in the early twentieth century — accounts differ on the exact year — playing Indian ragas in ensemble on modified instruments he built or adapted himself. It was an attempt to make classical music playable collectively, and it still exists.
Karma geet
Call-and-response songs sung to the mandar drum during Karma dancing, in Gondi and in Bagheli, with new verses improvised against fixed refrains through the night.
Bagheli life-cycle song
Sohar at births, banna and gaari at weddings, and bidai at departures — the same occasions Awadhi marks, in a closely related language, and often to recognisably related tunes.
Nirgun and Kabirpanthi bhajan
Unaccompanied or ektara-accompanied songs of the formless divine, sung at night gatherings and at deaths. The Kabir tradition has a substantial rural following through the Son valley and among Kol and weaving communities.
रंगमंच
Ramlila at Chitrakoot
Staged where the Ramayana's exile is located geographically rather than symbolically, along the Mandakini, with the audience able to walk to the places named in the text.
Swang and nautanki troupes
Night-long open-air plays with sung dialogue, performed by travelling male troupes at fairs, carrying repertoire in from the north and west. Thinning quickly.
शिल्प
Kol and Gond bamboo work Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Shahdol
Working equipment made to order for cultivators, and the largest craft employment in the region by number of hands. Almost none of it reaches a market outside the district.
सामग्री: Bamboo and sabai grass. तकनीक: Split-bamboo coiling and plaiting into baskets, grain bins, winnowing fans and fish traps.
Sal leaf plate pressing Shahdol, Umaria, Sidhi
A minor-forest-produce trade, largely run by women's self-help groups and forest cooperatives, that collapsed under plastic and has partly recovered on the back of plastic bans.
सामग्री: Sal leaves. तकनीक: Leaves stitched with slivers of bamboo, then pressed hot into plates and bowls.
Terracotta of the Son valley जीआई योग्य Sidhi, Shahdol
Votive terracotta offered at village shrines, made by potter families to order and left in the open to weather. The same tradition runs east into Chota Nagpur and south into Gondwana.
सामग्री: River clay. तकनीक: Hand-modelled and wheel-thrown votive figures — horses, elephants and bulls — open-fired in a pit.
Sandstone carving Rewa, Satna
Vindhyan sandstone splits cleanly along bedding planes, which makes it excellent for slabs and lintels and difficult for deep undercutting — the reason Bagelkhand's temple sculpture is shallower and more linear than Khajuraho's, which used a better-quarried stone from Panna.
सामग्री: Vindhyan sandstone. तकनीक: Hand carving of building elements, brackets, lintels and images from flat-bedded stone.
Rewa Sundarja mango जीआई पंजीकृत Rewa
Registered as a geographical indication in 2023 alongside the Morena gajak, and since exported commercially. It is the region's only registered indication.
सामग्री: A local mango landrace. तकनीक: Grafted orchards in a limited belt around Govindgarh, harvested by hand and graded by scent.
