जगहें

Triveni Sangamतीर्थPrayagraj

The confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the Saraswati of tradition. The bathing point shifts with the channels each year and is re-marked; boats go out to it from the fort bank all day.

सबसे अच्छा समय: January–February.

Prayagraj Fort, Akshayavat and the Ashokan pillarविरासतPrayagraj

Akbar's fort of 1583 at the confluence, holding the undying banyan of tradition and an Ashokan pillar carrying both the emperor's edicts and Samudragupta's fourth-century eulogy — three empires' inscriptions on one shaft.

Anand BhavanविरासतPrayagraj

The Nehru family house, given to the Congress in 1930 and now a museum. Much of the Indian national movement was organised from these rooms.

KaushambiविरासतKaushambi

The excavated capital of the Vatsa mahajanapada, with a huge earthen rampart and an Ashokan pillar — one of the oldest continuously identified city sites in the Ganga plain.

Bithoorतीर्थKanpur

Ganga ghats associated with the Valmiki ashram tradition, and the seat of Nana Saheb before 1857. Quiet for most of the year and crowded at Kartik Purnima.

Kanpur Memorial Church and the 1857 sitesविरासतKanpur

Built over the site of the 1857 killings, and unusually explicit about it. Read alongside Bithoor, it gives the two sides of the same events within twenty kilometres.

HastinapurविरासतMeerut

The Mahabharata capital, an excavated Painted Grey Ware site with evidence of an ancient flood, and now also a major Jain pilgrimage centre with a cluster of modern temples.

Aligarh Muslim UniversityविरासतAligarh

Founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan as MAO College in 1875 and a university since 1920. Its Strachey Hall, mosque and residential halls are the physical record of a nineteenth-century argument about education that shaped a century of Indian politics.

KannaujविरासतKannauj

Harshavardhan's seventh-century capital and, later, the prize three empires fought over. Today it is known for its perfume distilleries, and the ruins of the imperial city are largely under the modern town.

SankisaविरासतFarrukhabad

One of the eight great Buddhist sites, where the Buddha is said to have descended from the heaven of the thirty-three gods. An Ashokan elephant capital stands on a mound in a village field, still in worship.

DeobandविरासतSaharanpur

The Darul Uloom, founded in 1866, and the source of a school of Islamic thought with madrasas across South Asia and beyond.

Garhmukteshwarतीर्थHapur

The Ganga ghat closest to Delhi, and the site of a very large Kartik Purnima bathing fair and cattle market.

Company Bagh and the Botanical Garden, Saharanpurप्रकृतिSaharanpur

A garden established in the eighteenth century and taken over as a botanical station in 1817, from which much of India's colonial-era plant introduction was organised, including the cinchona and tea trials.

Shaheed Smarak and Augharnath Temple, MeerutविरासतMeerut

Where the revolt of 1857 began on 10 May. The temple by the old cantonment is where the sepoys are said to have been told of the greased cartridges.

Firozabad glass furnacesशहरीFirozabad

Not a monument but worth seeing — an entire town organised around glass, with furnaces, bangle-joining workshops and a wholesale market that supplies most of the country.
