Kirana gharana

One of the principal khayal schools of Hindustani music, named for Kairana in the Upper Doab. Shrine singing at the smaller dargahs of Aligarh, Kannauj, Bahadurgarh and Prayagraj, with a repertoire that overlaps with Delhi's.

Birha, alha and dhola

Sung narrative in the villages — the Alha ballad in the south and east, dhola in the west, and birha among the Ahir households, all performed by a lead singer with a small drum ensemble.

Ganga aarti and ghat singing

Evening river ritual at Garhmukteshwar, Soron, Bithoor and Prayagraj — bell, conch and a set liturgy, and bhajan singing on the steps afterwards.

रंगमंच

Nautanki mandalis

Professional touring companies based at Kanpur, Hathras and Farrukhabad, which through the early twentieth century were the mass entertainment of northern India before cinema replaced them.

Ramlila
